LONDON - The Spanish Canoeing Federation has lost its legal challenge to get its team entered instead of Russia in the K-2 1,000-meter event at the London Olympics.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said it had no authority to hear Spain's appeal against the International Canoeing Federation. A CAS panel said the qualification dispute pre-dated the special Olympics court opening in London on July 17.
Spanish officials requested that the court "prohibit the Russian National Olympic Committee from presenting" its entry. Russia qualified for the 10-nation lineup by its performance at the 2011 world championships.
The K-2 1,000-meter event starts Aug. 6 at Eton Dorney, west of London.
