Race for top-12 finish in 2012 Games tightening up for Canadian team

The Canadian Press London 2012

LONDON - A silver and bronze brings Canada's tally at the Olympic Games to 16 medals.

Canada is running out of swings at more gold. Rosannagh MacLennan's victory in trampoline is the only gold so far.

But the team's objective is a top-12 finish in the overall medal count, so every medal counts no matter the colour.

That race is tightening up. With three days of competition remaining, Canada is deadlocked in 11th with the Netherlands. Hungary is just one medal back at 15.

The good:

— Women's soccer team takes bronze for Canada's first Summer Games medal in a classic team sport since a men's basketball silver in 1936.

— Tonya Verbeek of Thorold, Ont., adds a silver medal to a collection that already included a bronze (2008) and silver (2004) in wrestling.

The bad:

— Judges have Canada's synchronized swim team fourth after technical routine. In this sport, where countries are ranked at the beginning tend to be where they are ranked when the medals are handed out.

Grade: A-minus.

Canada's best medal chances Friday are Karine Sergerie of Sainte-Catherine, Que., in taekwon-do and Richard Weinberger of Surrey, B.C., in the men's open-water swim.
