Divers to check sunken wreck off Newfoundland for further oil leaks

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A coast guard dive team is expected to investigate what may be another fuel leak from a sunken ship near Newfoundland's Change Islands.

Local residents noticed another sheen on the water in the area on the weekend, nearly a month after divers plugged two leaks on the wreck of the Manolis L (muh-NO'-liss ell).

Coast Guard spokesman Bob Grant says it's too early to say if the sheen on the water represents a new leak.

Grant says the dive team was scheduled to return to the site this week as a follow-up to the initial effort to stop the leaks.

Officials are hoping to send a remotely operated underwater vehicle down to the wreck on Wednesday.

The Liberian-flagged vessel sank in January 1985 with more than 500 tonnes of fuel oil and diesel onboard.
