TORONTO - A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman says the department is aware of reports that a Canadian has been arrested amidst the deadly turmoil in Cairo.
Caitlin Workman says Canada's embassy in the Egyptian capital is in contact with local authorities and stands ready to provide consular assistance, however, privacy concerns prevent her from releasing any details.
The Toronto Star reported Saturday that Toronto based filmmaker and York University professor John Greyson was arrested in Cairo Friday along with Tarek Loubani, an emergency room doctor from London, Ont.
The newspaper said Loubani telephoned a friend in Toronto on Friday and told him that he and Greyson were being arrested by Egyptian police, but said little else.
The friend said he then contacted the Canadian government.
Cairo has been ground zero for escalating protests by supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsi that have seen hundreds of people killed and injured.
