Beavers climb to second place in the east division

The Weyburn Beavers claimed important wins over the Melville Millionaires and the Yorkton Cardinals during road games on Sunday, which vaulted them into second place in the east division of the Western Major Baseball League.



The Weyburn Beavers claimed important wins over the Melville Millionaires and the Yorkton Cardinals during road games on Sunday, which vaulted them into second place in the east division of the Western Major Baseball League.

The Beavers are six-and-a-half games back of the Regina Red Sox, who sit in first place in the east division.

Both the Yorkton Cardinals and the Melville Millionaires are able to catch up to the Beavers, with over two weeks of the season still left to play.

The Beavers first played in Melville, where they claimed a 3-1 win over the Millionaires. The Beavers scored two runs in the second and one in the third. Melville got on the board by scoring one run in the sixth.

Riley Schaaf started on the mound, and had one run scored off seven hits in eight innings. Toby Eigner pitched as relief.

In their second game on Sunday, the Beavers won 4-3 over the Cardinals. Weyburn scored one run in the fourth, with Yorkton tying up the game with a run in the seventh. Then in the ninth inning, the Beavers scored three runs, while Yorkton was only able to pick up two runs.

Roman Lorentz started on the mound, and had one run scored off seven hits in six innings. Pitching relief were Toby Eigner, Houston Creighton and Matthew Kinney.

On Friday night, the Beavers lost twice against the Yorkton Cardinals, during a doubleheader hosted in Weyburn. In the first game, the Cardinals claimed a 8-4 win over the Beavers.

Weyburn had a strong start, after scoring four runs in the first inning and keeping the Cardinals to only one. But then Yorkton claimed five runs in the third inning, and they picked up two more in the sixth inning.

Ryan Johnson started on the mound, and had six runs scored off six hits in three innings. Eric Evans and Matthew Kinney both pitched relief.

During the second game against Yorkton, the Cardinals claimed a 5-3 win. The game started tight between the two teams, as Yorkton picked up one run in the first and one more in the third, and Weyburn had scored one run in both the first and second innings.

Both teams scored one run in the fifth inning to continue the tied games. The seven-game inning went into extra innings, and Yorkton finally picked up the win, after scoring two runs in the eighth inning.

Scott Beever started on the mound and had five runs scored off five hits in seven innings. Toby Eigner pitched relief.

Earlier in the week, the Beavers won 4-1 over the Melville Millionaires on July 10, and they won twice over the Yorkton Cardinals during a doubleheader on July 9, with both scores 6-3.

The Beavers play the Okotoks Dawgs on Monday and Tuesday. Their next game is a doubleheader at Tom Laing Park against Swift Current on Thursday, July 17.
