After tying for seventh, and earning $207,863 for the tournament, DeLaet had tweeted that he had hoped for a better showing at the event. "Not what I had hoped for today but hung in there. Thanks to everyone for the support and tweets this week. And how about Mike Weir?"
Weir shot a three-under 67 in the fourth round of the Byron Nelson championship on Sunday to finish in second place, two strokes behind of first-place winner Brendon Todd. It was Weir's best tournament since he finished second at Pebble Beach in 2009.
Since the beginning of the season, Graham DeLaet has a dozen top 10s, including three runners-up and a pair of third-place finishes. "Every time I've been in contention late in the weekend I feel like I've played pretty well, I haven't given anything away," said DeLaet. "It's just one of those things of getting one or two breaks, making a couple of long putts or chipping in and it's just one of those things."
"I feel like it hasn't happened yet, but my patience is there, and I feel like I'm playing well enough. Coming into this week, I felt like my game was really close if I could just make some putts. I was able to do that for a couple of rounds and find myself in good shape."
DeLaet has earned $1,968,796 so far in 2014, and is ranked 21st in the FedExCup. His official World Golf ranking is 33rd. During the 2014 PGA Tour season, he has placed second twice, and in the top 10 six times. He has also made the top 25 seven times, and only missed the cut three times this year.
Since DeLaet is the top-ranked golfer for greens-in-regulation percentage, and ranked eighth overall for driving distance, it is expected that Graham will earn his first ever PGA Tour championship this year.
During round one of the tournament, DeLaet started on the back nine where he stayed on par, with a lone birdie on hole 16. Then during the front nine, he bogeyed on hole three, but hit back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight. For the round, DeLaet was 68, two-under-par.
Back on the course for the second round, DeLaet started on the front nine, where he shot back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight again. Then during the back nine, he shot birdies on holes 11 and 15. After finishing the day with a four-under-par 66, DeLaet was in contention at the top of the leaderboard.
During round three, DeLaet started on the front nine, where he shot birdies on holes three and seven, and then a bogey on hole eight. During the back nine, he hit a birdie on hole 17 and finished at 68, two-under-par.
Then for the fourth and final round, DeLaet started on the front nine where he shot a birdie on hole three, but then back-to-back bogeys on holes four and five. During the back nine, he shot a bogey on hole 11, and then birdies on holes 14 and 16. He finished at par 70 for the round.
There was some excitement for DeLaet during the HP Byron Nelson, that had nothing to do with how he played - Graham had his courtesy car stolen on Friday. The stolen vehicle was eventually left at a McDonalds, where it was reclaimed.
Starting on Thursday, May 22, DeLaet will compete in the Crown Plaza Invitational at the Colonial course, located at Fort Worth, Texas.
