The Jean McCulloch Memorial Junior Piano Competition will be held in Weyburn on Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. at the T.C. Douglas Centre.
The McCulloch competition is made possible through the generous donation of Regina piano teacher Jean McCulloch. This competition recognizes the hard work and talent of Saskatchewan piano students working in Grades 3 through 8.
It will hopefully be a stepping-stone for students into the SRMTA senior level competitions. The Jean McCulloch Junior Piano Competition travels throughout the province, and it will be held in Weyburn this year for the first time.
The provincial competition is open to students of Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers.
There will be 12 performers from across the province who will perform 10-20 minute programs of piano music from a variety of styles.
The adjudicator this year is pianist Tanya Derksen, Executive Director of the Regina Symphony Orchestra.
Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grade 3-4 piano, $200 award donated by Yamaha Piano Centre of Saskatoon. For Grade 5-6 piano, $250 award donated by Yamaha Piano Centre of Saskatoon, and for Grade 7-8 piano, there will be a $300 award donated by Barber Motors of Weyburn.
In the competition last year, Ross Van De Weyer of Weyburn won the Grade 5-6 category, and Bridget Alexander of Weyburn won the Grade 3-4 category.
