It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laverne Hodgson on the 28th day of December, 2013 in La Jolla, California, having just celebrated her 85th birthday on November 30, in Niagara Falls, and a beautiful Christmas with family in the warmth and sun of Southern California. Laverne was born in Swift Current, where she met and married Chuck, her loving husband of 61 years. Together, they raised three children; Bill, Lynn and Bev, moving first to Regina, then Moosomin, and finally to Weyburn where they resided for most of the past 46 years. She is survived by her loving husband Chuck, and son Bill (Ursula), grandson Kris (Madison) and great granddaughter Hazel, granddaughter Angela (Michael), granddaughter Annika (Steve) and greatgrandson William, and granddaughter Catherine; her daughter Lynn (Garth) granddaughter Bethany (Asa), step granddaughter Zoe (Jason) and great granddaughter Brinley, and step granddaughter Adela (Wade), and great grandsons Eric and Adam; as well as her daughter Bev (Steve) and grand-daughter Lennon. A graduate of the Saskatoon City Hospital nursing school in 1950, Laverne remained a devoted nurse for over 40 years until retirement from the Weyburn Union Hospital in 1990. Always a consummate professional, she loved her work and her staff. She thoroughly enjoyed the get togethers with her nursing colleagues to which she had been invited even after retirement. Following an accidental fall in 2012, Laverne received such good care from both the younger nursing staff and those of her girls who were still nursing, and for that, her family is forever thankful. A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, Laverne always put her family before self. Laverne and Chuck enjoyed over 40 wonderful years with the Weyburn Rotary Club, and loved to spend time in their garden together. They sincerely missed all of their neighbours and friends when they moved to Niagara Falls in 2012 to be closer to family. Weyburn was always home. Laverne is predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Josephine Mitchell, and her sister Marjorie Burnett, as well as her brother-in-law Fred Hodgson, sister-in-law Grace Hodgson, sister-in-law Audrey Rutledge, and niece, Linda Smythe. She is survived by her brother-in-law Jim Burnett and his five sons, Erna Hodgson, Dorothy and Harvey Boyd, Skid and Pat Hodgson, Rusty Rutledge, Pat and Norm Henick and their extended families. A sunset memorial for Laverne was held by her family in La Jolla, California where she and Chuck were visiting at the time of her death. No funeral service will be held.
