Local Co-op baked bread not hit by recall

A recall was made for cheese breads made by Federated Co-operatives, but this will not affect any breads baked by the Weyburn Co-op bakery, said Don Kraft, general manager of the Prairie Sky Co-operative.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the recall for bread containing cheese as they may be contaminated with listeria.

The four bread types are, under the Co-op brand, California garlic bread, garlic-cheese bread, garlic-cheese bread two-pack, and under Market Town Co-op brand, pizza bread.

Kraft explained some Co-op bakeries use Sunridge shredded cheese to make these products, but in the Weyburn bakery they only use Armstrong cheese, which was not affected by the recall.

"We do use a different cheese base in all our baked products," said Kraft.

If any of these Co-op breads were purchased outside of the Weyburn or Beaubier Co-ops, they should be either thrown out or taken back to the store where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with listeria can produce a number of symptoms, including vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
