The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce held its annual Parade of Lights on Thursday evening, with over 45 float entries taking part in the annual Christmastime event.
The streets were lined with hundreds of spectators, with the weather a balmy -7 degrees enabling spectators all along Prairie Avenue as well as downtown on Third and Second Streets as the parade made its way through the centre of the city.
The award winners of the parade were Swayze’s Concrete in the business category, and the Atomic Purple minor hockey team in the organizations category.
The Swayze’s entry featured an elf perched on the front of a brightly-lit truck, filled with huge presents in the back. The Atomic Purple float had an ice rink with a referee and team players on it and walking beside it.
“All the participants and spectators truly spread Christmas cheer and community spirit along the parade route,” said Twila Walkeden, executive director of the Weyburn Chamber, who was accompanied by Chamber staff as they walked the route handing out treats.
The Weyburn Chamber is extending gratitude to all of the organizations, businesses and community members who entered the parade, and to the Weyburn Police Service and City of Weyburn for helping make the parade run smoothly.
The Chamber also noted a number of businesses stayed open late and some offered sales which greatly enhanced the Parade of Lights event.
“The cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and the business community is a vital part of our economy, making Weyburn and area an exceptional place to live, play, visit and invest,” said Walkeden.
“This year’s parade was one for the record book, as the community pride of our residents continues to be a driving force celebrating Weyburn’s activities and events.”
