The Weyburn Comprehensive School and the Rotary Club of Weyburn are combining to host “Lobsterfest 2018” on Saturday, May 12. Cocktails will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre, with supper of either steak or lobster at 6:30 p.m.

Along with the fantastic meal, there will be excerpts from the upcoming musical “Beauty and the Beast” and a few numbers done by the STARS Show Choir. Tickets for $60 can be purchased from Rotarians, the school office or at Barber Motors (credit cards will be accepted here only).

A Westjet flight for two anywhere that Westjet flies will be raffled off at Lobsterfest along with a huge lobster. There will be other raffle items.

The Rotary Club has a partnership with the school, providing two $750 scholarships and is the main supporter of the Weyburn Rotary Music Festival (many students perform in it). The club also provides students the opportunity to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly (up to four students at Clear Lake, Man., each summer), Adventures in Agriculture (during Agribition), in Technology (U of S), in Citizenship (Ottawa) and hopefully in peace (Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg).

Also Rotary is heavily involved in year-long and short-term exchanges, sending out a student each year. Hannah Bitz is currently in Belgium, and Brayden King will be going to Belgium next year, and the club has been hosting an exchange student since 1976. This year’s student is Liza Biard from France, and next year’s student will be from Taiwan.

Money raised from this event will support other Rotary programs like Polio Plus (only eight cases of polio in the world this year), Shelterbox (supplying tents and other items to disasters) and many other programs.

The SRC, as they are not having a fowl supper this year, will use the money to host a “Breaking Down the Walls” event in the fall. This workshop will be facilitated by Phil Boyte from North Carolina. It is a comprehensive program designed to unify, empower and engage every student to create a positive and supportive school climate that is inclusive, safe and supportive. This will take place over a three-day period.

Plan to come out, partake in a lovely lobster meal, enjoy great entertainment, participate in the raffles and support both the Comp’s SRC and the Rotary Club of Weyburn.

On Tuesday, the Weyburn Concert Series hosted their last concert of the year, Bob Cates, who put on a family-oriented variety show.

Three-way conferencing will take place tonight, April 18, and Thursday evening, April 19. All students should have arranged an appointment. The postponed Regional Science Fair will be held in the Cugnet Centre during the day on Friday, April 20, with the public able to view it from noon to 2:40 p.m.

There will be a senior badminton tournament in Estevan on Saturday.
