Noah Verville of Creelman, a cadet with the 2988 Montmartre Legion Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, is seeking new challenges this summer in British Columbia as he completes the Basic Expedition Course at Vernon Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, B.C. This is his first time at the training centre.
Verville is thoroughly enjoying the new experiences and the new life-long bonds that he is creating. During the Basic Expedition Course, the opportunities for learning new skills, such as mountain biking and canoeing, are endless, and there’s nothing holding Verville back this summer.
Although Verville lives in Creelman, he travels to Montmartre to attend cadets, which he joined two years ago upon the suggestion of his friends. Verville’s favorite thing about the cadet program is the opportunities to attend summer training. This is his second summer which he has had the chance to attend summer training, having completed the general training course at Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre last summer.
During the Basic Expedition Course, he will participate in adventurous activities such as abseiling, mountain biking, canoeing, and trekking. He is particularly excited about learning how to mountain bike.
One thing that Verville has found interesting at Vernon Cadet Training Centre so far is the exposure to sea and air cadets, which is something he does not have back home in Creelman.
“I really love Vernon’s scenery. It’s so beautiful out here. I like the heat too,” said Verville.
More than 1,500 Sea, Army and Air Cadets are participating in summer training activities in Vernon this summer. Other cadets have had the opportunity to travel across the country and even overseas.
Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets are national programs for youth ages 12 to 18, which aim to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. The programs are delivered by the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Armed Forces, in partnership with the civilian Navy League, Army and Air Cadet Leagues of Canada.
