The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure has chosen “preferred routes” for the twinning of Highways 6 and 39, and are seeking endorsements of the routes by the end of November so the project can move to its next phase.
The twinning project will run from Regina southeast to North Portal, with the goal to build it up to a high-speed four-lane highway.
For the communities in the Weyburn region, the following realignments are being proposed:
• Highway 6 is to be established east of the existing lanes;
• Corinne: the new set of lanes will be on the west side adjacent to the existing lanes;
• Yellow Grass: Highway 39 is to be realigned around the south side of the town;
• McTaggart: new lanes to be establied to the north of the existing lanes, using the CP Rail right-of-way;
• Weyburn: Highway 39 is to be realigned around the south side of the city;
• Ralph: the new set of lanes is to be built north between the CP Rail line and the existing lanes;
• Halbrite: Highway 39 is to be realigned around the south side of the village;
• Midale: Highway 39 is to be realigned around the south side of town.
In addition, in the rural areas between Corinne and Weyburn, and Weyburn and Estevan, the new lanes will be built south of the existing lanes.
According to the ministry, the next planning phase is functional planning, which is expected to begin in the near future, and will help further determine right-of-way requirements and the number and location of access points.
“Collaboration with municipalities is essential in order for the future Highway 6 and Highway 39 corridor to meet the needs of the community and of the province overall,” said a letter from assistant deputy minister Blair Wagar.
