Weyburn and area residents can be exposed to a wide variety of arts and culture as the City hosts workshops and art shows at a number of venues for Culture Days, which runs from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2.
“We’re trying to expose people to different art forms they otherwise wouldn’t necessarily have a chance to see or take part in,” said Alice Neufeld, Arts and Cultural Director for the City of Weyburn.
She and a number of organizations have been working together to organize the events at venues ranging from the Signal Hill Arts Centre and the Weyburn Public Library to the City Centre Mall, the Captain’s Hall and the Soo Line Historical Museum, with all events free of charge to all residents.
Neufeld noted all of the events and workshops are designed to family-oriented, to encourage families to come out and take part in them.
One workshop is entitled, Exploring Language and Identity Through Painting workshop, led by Audrey Dreaver at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. Students from Grades 5 and 6 will be taking part in the workshop throughout the day, and in the evening, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., families and individuals can come out and take part. The workshop will focus on indigenous art, and will look at how art symbols are used to represent words and language.
At the Captain’s Hall will be the Ukrainian Pavilion, featuring the “Magic of Karpaty Zabava”, with dancing by the Regina Ukrainian Ensemble, violinist Nadia Babchouk and entertainer Bogdan Dobovyy.
The Weyburn Arts Council will host the second annual “Pop Up Gallery” at the City Centre Mall, where local art will available for sale, and an art display and sale, “Diverse Endeavours” will be on at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. The library will feature a culture fair with displays from around the world, and there will be a collaborative mural workshop at the Signal Hill Arts Centre under the direction of Regan Lanning on Friday from 7-8:30 p.m.
