Weyburn city council awarded the tender for the replacement of the watermains on Government Road at their May 14 council meeting, and the work is slated to start in mid-July.

The work to be done includes the replacement of about 462 metres of 250 mm watermain, associated infrastructure and renewal of 20 water and waste water service connections, and provision of temporary overland water service to 34 properties along Government Road.

The City had representatives from six companies on the site prior to the submission of the proposals, including two local companies, and in the end, two proposals were received.

The proposal chosen was from Jordan Excavating from the RM of Sherwood, worth $502,427, for the watermain replacement.

The project includes the provision of $90,000 worth of material by the city, and a separate component to mill and repave the entire road surface after the completion of the watermain replacement, estimated at a cost of $350,000, for a total project cost of $942,427.

The work is expected to be completed between July 15 and Aug. 30, and city engineer Nader Keshta indicated they will try to also have the pavement over the area done this year. The work will be done block by block south down Government Road, starting in the block just south of First Avenue.

In other council business, council awarded the tender to replace all of the carpet on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library to Weyburn Carpet One, at a cost of $18,931, including labour, materials and taxes. The work is slated to be completed between June 18 and June 29.

The carpet on the lower level will be replaced with a luxury vinyl tile, which is considered to be better suited to most of the programs conducted on the lower level.

Council also approved a request from the Weyburn Legion to do a chicken drop as a fundraiser during the Weyburn Car Show on Saturday, June 16.

The Legion asked for permission to have from one to three chickens in an enclosed area for a “Chicken Poop-Off”, in which the Legion will sell squares. If the chicken poops on the square, the buyer of it will win a portion of the pot.

The enclosed area will be located in the vacant lot between the Legion and the theatre building during the car show. The funds will be put towards the operations and repairs of the facility.

City council also approved a request from Minard’s Leisure World to increase the number of stored RV units to 150 units on their site year round.

The approval is subject to a number of conditions, including that any fence constructed around the property be a maximum of eight feet in height, that any security lights installed comply with the zoning bylaw requirements, any areas not occupied by buildings, parking, loading or storage shall be landscaped, and all property shall be maintained with the standards set out in the city’s property maintenance bylaw.
