The 10th annual Night Out for Cystic Fibrosis was well attended on May 26, with a full house supporting the efforts to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Mike and Cara Weger have organized the event for the last 10 years, with the first event held after their daughter Teresa was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was two-and-a-half years old.
“Immediately following our daughter’s diagnosis, we made it our personal commitment to do everything we could to help find a cure or control for Cystic Fibrosis,” explained Weger in a family message. “We do not fundraise for our daughter, we fundraise because of her.”
Mike and Cara were recognized with their personal commitment during the Night Out for Cystic Fibrosis, as they were presented with the Mila Mulroney award by Dawn Huck, coordinator, event and fund development, CF Canada.
The Mila Mulroney Award honors a family impacted by cystic fibrosis that had made significant ongoing contributions to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, through their continued fundraising efforts as a family.
The evening also featured Tenille Arts who sang “Breathe”, a song written by Matt Scales, who suffered from Cystic Fibrosis. Tenille recorded the song as a fundraiser for CF Canada, who received 100 per cent of the proceeds. Codie Prevost also performed during the evening.
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Cystic Fibrosis affects breathing and digestion and currently there is no cure.
In the last nine years of the Night Out for Cystic Fibrosis, Team Teresa has raised over $400,000. Another $22,000 was raised during the event on May 26. These funds have assisted with research advancements that are extending the lives of young people and adults living with this disease.
Mike and Cara noted that this would be the last year for the Night Out for Cystic Fibrosis. They will continue their commitment to fundraise, and any future plans or events will be announced at a later date.
Auctioneer Winston Bailey held a live auction during the middle of the evening. One special note of interest was that a two-night stay at the Stone Ridge Mountain Resort was purchased by PAR Contracting and donated back to the Weger family.
