The 2016 Reunion Committee are very satisfied with the interest in the event, and with the communication that has been flourishing between old friends, teachers and classmates. According to Bryan Onstad, one of the organizers for the Reunion, they have a graduate from 1936 who is attending on Friday night, and have graduates for every decade since then who are also attending.
“School reunions are often just for your graduating class, but in a city the size of Weyburn, most of us knew people many years older and younger,” said Onstad. “This will be a great opportunity for me, and many other people to meet up with people we haven’t seen in some time. I moved away from Weyburn in 1980 and have returned almost yearly for visits, but there are many who I haven’t seen since 1980. I think many of us are in that situation.”
“The fundraising and building of the Cugnet Centre and Colleen Weimer Hall motivated us to show this community achievement off to many people, like me, who hadn’t had the chance to see it.”
“To fill it up on Friday and Saturday night with former students is a dream come true.”
“I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone and am excited to have a drink with those who have put so much effort into making this a success. We could not have done this without Barb and Ken Petrescue at Superior Office Products, Greg Button and Mathew Warren with City of Weyburn, Jeff Heisler and all the people on the committees,” said Onstad.
Information has been provided on the events for the Reunion 2016, so those who are interested in attending can make their plans. Everything starts with a pre-reunion bash at PumpJacks on Thursday, July 28 at 5 p.m.
Then Friday, July 29 is the tribute night where former students plan to pay tribute to the school and city. The committee has secured a large tent for a beer garden outside north of the old gymnasium. Things will get going around 5 p.m. There will be some memorabilia in the school for all to see.
Entertainment will start around 8 p.m., when The March Hare Band will be performing their “Through The Decades” show along with some other surprises.
There will be food trucks outside and the Welsh Kitchen will be inside providing meals. Attendees will have the opportunity to eat in the many great restaurants in Weyburn or grab some food at the school.
Also on Friday evening, the City of Weyburn will showcase “Inside Out” as a Movie in the Park at the Weyburn Jubilee Park, starting at dusk at ball diamond #5.
Planned for Saturday, July 30, there will be a Legion pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., and tours of Haig, Queen Elizabeth and the Weyburn Comp from 1 to 3 p.m. Then in the evening, the beer gardens and the Weyburn Comp School will open at 5 p.m. People can visit, look at the memorabilia and then enjoy some dancing in the Cugnet Centre with top Weyburn band “Switch” at 7 p.m. This will be followed by “March Hare” at 8:30 p.m.
For Sunday, July 31, the City of Weyburn will offer a free swim at the Weyburn Leisure Centre at 12 noon, for an old fashioned pool party. There will be a reunion golf tournament at 1 p.m., followed by a steak dinner at the Weyburn Golf Club.
There are also a few Weyburn organizations and restaurants running events where people can attend for breakfasts and lunches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Weyburn Arts Council will be held at the Signal Hill Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30. There will be a Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame travling exhibit located north of the Cugnet Centre during the weekend. Plus there are special demonstrations at the Heritage Village on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 2 to 4 p.m. Check out the special Reunion feature in today’s Weyburn Review.
