Emma Evalina Rolston

Emma Evalina (Eva) (Bunch) Rolston, 109 years, passed away peacefully at the Twilight Home in Bengough, SK, February 7, 1999. She was born at Albia, Iowa U.S.A. January 16, 1890. Eva grew up at Bussy, Iowa and took her education there. In 1906 she moved to Canada with her stepfather and mother and a brother to the Lang area. She worked at a boarding house in Lang, and met her husband, Ed who worked in the butcher shop. Ed and Eva were married April 19, 1909 at Melita, MB. They moved to the farm at Amulet in 1910, living there in the Norton R.M. for 29 years. They purchased the store in Amulet in 1939, living there until 1946 when she moved to Ogema. Eva worked for Libby's Store and the drug store. On March 1, 1979 she moved into the Twilight Home in Bengough. She was secretary for the Red Cross. Eva is a member of the United Church, U.C.W. serving on the board and sang in the choir. She had a life membership with the Rebekah Lodge and the Legion Auxiliary. She also was an ardent curler. She was president of the resident council for the Twilight Home and on the committee for resident choice. Eva was predeceased by her husband, Edward; sons, William and John; brother, William Bunch; and sons-in-law Karl Kessler and Frank Cook. She is survived by her son, Ray (Margaret) Rolston of Edmonton, AB; her daughters: Pearl (Dan) Rainey of Pangman; Ruby Cook of Kelowna, BC; and Audrey Kessler of Pangman; daughters-in-law: Ines Rolston of Coleman, AB and Norah Rolston of Edmonton; 25 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, 90 great great grandchildren, and one great great great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Thursday, February 11, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from Ogema United Church, with Rev. Christa Eidsness officiating. Interment followed in Amulet Cemetery. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Jack Rainey, Bryon Cook, Lorie Rolston, Bob Kessler, David Rolston and Charles Kessler. In lieu of flowers, for friends so wishing, donations may be made to the Twilight Centennial Home, Bengough; United Church, Ogema, or to a charity of choice, in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.

On February 6, 1999, Bessie Jean Richardson passed on to her eternal home, just five weeks after her 100th birthday. Her parents were John and Sara McLeod. They came from Harriston, ON to the Colgate area in 1906. Their family consisted of seven sons: Duncan, William, John, Dave, Dan, Allan and Jim, plus three girls: Annie, Minnie and Bessie who was the last survivor of this pioneer family. Bessie attended Lorndale school which was built in 1908. She married Joe Richardson on January 28, 1926 and they lived on their farm at Colgate. After their son Gordon married and began farming they moved to Weyburn and spent some winters in Florida, Texas or Victoria. Bessie attended the United Church where she enjoyed being in one of the units and visiting with friends. After Gordon's wife Helen died in 1964 and his youngest son Gary died in 1967, Bessie and Joe were like loving parents to their remaining grandchildren at their home on 2nd Street. When Joe died in 1974 Bessie remained in her home until 1977 when she moved to Pioneer Place and later to the Special Care Home. Bessie is survived by one son Gordon (Jean) Richardson and three grandchildren: Diane (Dennis) Gregory and their three sons of Calgary; Allan (Dianne) Richardson and their three sons and one daughter; Glen (Janice) Richardson and three sons, all of Houston, Texas. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Bill Corkum in Grace United Church on February 12. Pallbearers were Hugh McLeod, Don Neill, Elaine Moats, Dennis Gregory, Allan and Glen Richardson. For friends so wishing, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of their choice. Arrangements were made by Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home, Weyburn.

Ernie Robert Kennedy

On Tuesday, February 2, 1999, Ernie Robert Kennedy, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by his parents, William and Bertha Kennedy; his wife, Elsie Kennedy; two grandsons, Sean Manz and Cory Froehlich; three brothers: Wilfred, Kenneth and Harold Kennedy; and two sisters-in-law, Kelly Kennedy and Mary Kennedy. He leaves to mourn his four daughters: Norma (Les) Baumgartner of Regina; Janice Guilbault of Regina; Donna (Marvin) Manz of Cochrane, AB; and Nadine (Ken) Froehlich of Marquis, SK; two brothers: James (Helen) Kennedy of Regina; and Gordon (Gertie) Kennedy of Lumsden; one sister, Cora (Oscar) Deters of Regina; sister-in-law, Audrey Kennedy of Weyburn; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ernie was born June 12, 1915 and was raised in the Francis area. He married Elsie Hein December 31, 1946 and farmed in the Francis area until he retired in 1981. He served as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942-1946. One of his missions involved the bombing of the bridge over River Kwai. He loved spending time with his family and friends, always enjoyed a good joke and could spend hours playing cards. There were many evenings spent around the kitchen table playing cards with his grandchildren. He was an active curler until he was 75 and golfed until this last summer. One of the many things his family will always remember and cherish him for was the wonderful care he took of his wife Elsie, for the last five years of her life when she was ill. Funeral service was held Friday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Gary Deters, Morley Deters, Lorne Kennedy, Wade Zotzman, Wayne Hein and David Hein. Those wishing to express their sympathy may donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or to the Canadian Cancer Society in his memory. On February 3, 1999 Lawrence Storle, late of Estevan, passed away at the age of 69 years. Lawrence has rejoined his brother Clifford, his sister Alice, his parents Severt and Hilda and his grandson Luke Storle who predeceased him. He leaves to remember him his children: Scott (Kel) Storle of Victoria; Kevin (Dianne) Storle of Grande Prairie, AB; Wayne (Mavis) Storle of Lake Alma, SK; and Pat (Ron) Hill of Grande Prairie, AB; and their mother Lorraine Ball; his grandchildren: Kerri, Jarett and Krystal Storle; Dustin Storle; Tina, James and Stacy Hill; his great grandchildren: Alyssa Thorig and Shalyn Snieder; his brothers: Orville (Clarice) Storle of Lake Alma; Irvin (Victoria) of Regina; his sister: Viola Storle of Regina as well as his cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers. Lawrence was born at Oungre on September 15, 1929. He was baptized at Scobey, Montana on July 5, 1930. He lived most of his life on the farm. He started farming with his father. On July 17, 1950 he married Lorraine Duncan, a local school teacher. He completely took over the farming from Severt when his parents retired in 1951. He was blessed with four children. Lawrence was never afraid of hard work. Although he ran up to date machinery, you would see him in the field on a hot day with the cab door open so that he could "hear what the motor was doing." He purchased his father's farm in 1971. He watched his children grow and start their own lives until 1991 when he suffered a stroke. He had built his grain and livestock operation into one of the larger ones in the community. He operated Storle Trucking helping build highways in the province. He also went custom combining in the U.S. He went fishing often in northern Sask. and became an avid traveller. He enjoyed farm shows like Agribition and bull sales. He made several trips sponsored by John Deere. He took pleasure in dancing, country music, eating lutefisk and lefse and playing cards. He, above all, loved to have his grandchildren around him. He remained a farmer at heart even through his handicap. He travelled from his home at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home to be in the midst of the farming operation that he loved. He would sit for hours watching in the fields and from time to time ride on the combine. Even though at times his caregivers thought that he could not communicate, he let them know that he could by being caught cheating at checkers. He participated in many activities with his caregivers and other friends at the nursing home. He always retained his sense of humour. The funeral service was held from Lake Alma Lutheran Church on February 8 with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Pallbearers were: Clarke, Roger, Orin, Charles, Marc and Greg Storle. Interment followed at Saron Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements were in care of Orsted Funeral Home Ltd. Those wishing to may donate to the Lake Alma Lutheran church in his memory.

Edwin "Ed" Appenheimer passed away peacefully at Weyburn General Hospital, February 6, 1999 after battling with cancer for the past few years, at the age of 77. Predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Theresa Appenheimer; three brothers: Leon, Frank and Ernest; sisters: Frieda, Elsie, Rose, Eva and Emma-Jean. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Midale; five children: sons: Allan (Angie) Appenheimer of Abbotsford, BC; and David of Lloydminster, AB; daughters: Betty (Rick) Mailhiot of Virden, MB; Teresa (Kerry) Leckie of Lloydminster, AB; and Heather Runje of Vancouver; seven grandchildren: Melissa, Terrice, Kellsey, Jake, Matthew, Aaron and Paige; brother Herb (Ruby) Appenheimer of Calgary; sister-in-law, Jean Appenheimer of Cupar; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was born in Markinch, SK and grew up on a mixed farm near there. He took most of his formal education at a small country school in Markinch, SK. On November 3, 1962 Ed married Jean Schick and their marriage was blessed with five children and lasted 36 years. Ed and Jean began their family in Southey, where they lost their home to a fire. Following this devastation, they moved to Pangman, Macoun, Midale and Weyburn. His quest for knowledge was his main passion and he loved to read, especially the hockey news. Ed was an avid sports fan, who thoroughly enjoyed watching hockey, football and baseball games. He was active in various associations such as Pro-Life, Healthy Horizons and local parent-teacher associations. Ed was a great supporter of agricultural causes and politically active with the Reform Party. Family gatherings with his 15 children and grandchildren were always a source of joy for Ed. Funeral service was held Tuesday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. from First Baptist Church, Midale, with Pastor Dwayne Harms officiating. Interment followed in Westphalia Cemetery, Midale. Pallbearers were Wayne Appenheimer, Graham Haus, Grant Haus, Don Neuls, Gerald Blierot and Lynden Schick. In lieu of flowers, for friends so wishing, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church or to Mainprize Manor, Midale. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.

On Wednesday, February 3, 1999, Wilmer George Hausch, late of Creelman, passed away at the age of 70 years. Predeceased by his parents, George and Ella Hausch; his wife, Alice Hausch; two brothers: Duncan Hausch and Norman Hausch; three sisters: Ruby Driver, Marion Harris and Verna Sander. Wilmer is survived by a daughter, Joleen Hausch of Burnaby, BC; grandchildren: Tammy Hausch, Tanya Hausch and Whalen Hausch, all of Burnaby; great grandchildren: Tess Hausch and Tamara Hausch; one sister, Erla (Don) Kokx of Joshua Tree, Calif; brothers and sisters-in-law: Curly Harris of Pilot Butte; Patty Hausch of Alberta; Gertie Hausch of Weyburn; and Ernie Sander of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Wilmer was born April 17, 1928 on the family farm near Creelman. He grew up on the farm and attended the rural school of Crieff. Because his mother passed away when he was only eight months old, his three older sisters helped to raise him. He lived in Creelman all of his life. Wilmer worked at various jobs throughout his life, mainly at construction or general handyman jobs. He enjoyed playing cards, especially crib and whist. When he was in better health, he grew a huge vegetable garden which usually produced enough vegetables to last him the winter. A special highlight in his life was travelling to Vancouver to visit his family. He was able to go a few times before his failing health forced him to stay close to home. He was able to stay at home with the help of Home Care. The family would like to thank home care, who helped him during the last few years. Special thanks to Janet Carnegie and Lavonne Duxbury who both seemed to have a special understanding of the type of man he was. Funeral service was held Tuesday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. from Creelman United Church with Rev. Brian Burke officiating. Interment followed in Golden Gates Cemetery, Creelman. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Gordon Johnston, Jim Carnegie, Willie Carnegie, Keith Tordiff, Ray Tully and Jim Greig. On Saturday, February 6, 1999, Dennis Francis Victor Gregory, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 76 years. Predeceased by his wife, Lois Agnes; his parents Joseph and Deborah Gregory; two brothers: Larry and Mark Gregory; and three sisters; Chris, Deborah and Grace. Dennis is survived by his children: Dennene (Barry) Burton; Jack (Janet) Gregory; Dennis (Dianne) Gregory, all of Calgary; and Paul (Louanne) Gregory of Regina; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; four sisters: Jean (Ike) Buckner of Weyburn; Florence Rozon of Assiniboia; Lillian (George) Dexter of Calgary; and Louise Stoughton of Vancouver; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dennis was born January 29, 1923 at Weyburn, the youngest of a family of 10, seven girls and three boys. His father was J.D. Gregory, a painter and decorator in Weyburn. He received his schooling in Weyburn, graduating from Weyburn Collegiate Institute in 1939, and attended R.A.F. Wireless school in Montreal. During the war he was a radio mechanic in the R.A.F. stationed in Montreal, Lachine Quebec, and coastal BC. On August 24, 1946, Dennis married Lois Bracey in Verwood, SK. They lived a brief time in Dauphin, MB, then moved to Weyburn where Dennis was the manager of the Eaton's Store from the mid 1950's until the store closure in 1987. Dennis was widely read in local and national topics, he enjoyed reading about local history and travel. Dennis was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. The funeral mass was held Saturday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn with Father John Mock celebrant. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: John Sabourin, Larry Dally, Mark Belanger, Don Grant, Mark Gregory and Ken Dean. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #47 held a Last Post Service. James Edward Rose, late of Stoughton, passed away peacefully at the Regina General Hospital surrounded by family, February 6, 1999 at the age of 76 years. Jim was born November 21, 1922. He loved people, farm work and life. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Teddy and Mary Rose; uncles: Frank Rose, Harv Cull, Arthur Cull and Bill Cull; aunts: Helen Pegelow, Harriet Shafer and Irene Cull; one sister, Marjory Smith; one brother-in-law, Elwood Smith; and one son-in-law, Jim Popplestone. Jim was the loved and loving husband of Bertha (nee MacDonald); proud father of daughters Cheryl Popplestone of Pilot Mound, MB; Bette (Peter) Greidanus of Lethbridge, AB; very proud grandpa of Jackie (Rudy Plooy) and Giselle Popplestone; Dorothy (Dave) Warner; Marc, Shareen, Julie and Carlynne Greidanus; great granddaughters: Danielle and Victoria Warner; two brothers Ernest (Lillian) Dickey, and Bill (Muriel) Rose his life-long farming partner; two sisters, Kay (Donald) Allan and Carrie (Edward) Knight; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing was held Thursday, February 11 at 11:30 a.m. from the Heward Hall with interment following at 1:00 p.m. in Heward Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11 from Grace United Church, Stoughton with Rev. Jann Sampson officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Chester Ray, Floyd Hemphill, Dave Hemphill, Lyall McKee, Mac Allan, Art Mowles, Walter Seabrook and Leslie (Chief) Ray. The active pallbearers were Roy Obst, Clarry Cameron, Alex Allan, Ralph Dickie, Ralph Hemphill and Nolan Wallace. Donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor's choice, in his memory. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn.

Cecil Reid passed away suddenly February 10, 1999 at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 81 years. Cecil Edward Reid was born at Ogema, SK in 1917. He took his schooling in Ogema. He enlisted when the war broke out and was in the army 'C' Platoon 4th Canadian Armored Brigade Company R.C.A.S.C. for six years. After the war Cecil bought a farm at Glasnevin, SK and farmed there until 1994, when he and his wife moved to Weyburn. Cecil was predeceased by his mother and father, William and Berthelda Reid; one sister, Merle Waffle and one brother-in-law, Roy Peterson. He is survived by his loving wife, Elsie; and a stepson Merv (Elaine) Pearson of Drayton Valley, AB; one brother, Clare (Stella) Reid of Imperial, SK; two sisters Edith Peterson of Regina, and Dorothy (Dick) Cox of Webb, SK; and many more friends and relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and step grandchildren. Funeral service was held Monday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. from the Weyburn Community Free Methodist Church with Pastor Merv Switzer officiating. Interment followed in Ogema Cemetery. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Darcy Reid, Donald Reid, Dennis Dorgan, Gilbert Trithdart, Jason Frey and Terry Webb. Alice Gertrude Comba passed away Monday, February 15, 1999 at the Beverely Center in Calgary, AB. She is survived by her loving family: one son Garth Leslie Comba of Toronto; one daughter Karen (Ron) Nichols; one grandson Ken (Corri); one great grandson Tyler, all of Calgary; four brothers: Hugh, George, Don and Gerald as well as three sisters: Evelyn, Norma, Verna. She was predeceased by her husband George Leslie Comba on August 20, 1977 and one infant daughter, Avis; three sisters, Ellen, Edith, Gladys, and one brother Frederick. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 22 at Hillsdale Alliance Church, 3575 Hillsdale Street, Regina, commencing at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Arrangements by Personal Alternative Funeral Services, Calgary.
