OBITUARIES
Robert
Frederick (Fred) West
-
- On Friday, May 14, 1999, Robert Frederick (Fred) West of
Weyburn passed away suddenly at the Weyburn General Hospital.
He was 88 years of age. Fred was much loved and will be missed
dearly by his nieces and nephews: May Mazur; Herb and Irene Conn;
Rose Marie and Len Gustensen; Betty Asten; Don and Donna West;
Garth and Audrey West; Glenn and Emma Tindall, Ethel Kelly; Gordon
and Kay Tindall; Phillip and Mabel Tindall; Vera and Elmer Ross;
Dorland and Dorothy Tindall; Betty and Bill Garling; Maxine Cozart;
Ernie and Diane Cozart; Abbie and Jean Cozart; Arnold and Fern
Cozart; Wayne and Elaine Cozart; Lyle and Joyce Cozart; Ed and
Marcil Cozart; Marilyn and John Coote; Sharon and David Manning;
Haven West and Irma Jean and Dennis Kittelson. He is also survived
by many great nieces and great nephews. Fred was predeceased
by his parents, John West (born in Germany) and Jeannie Jack
(born in Scotland), as well as four brothers: Henry, Ed, Jim
and Gordon; and four sisters: Ella Conn, Mamie Tindall, Alice
Tindall and Maggie Cozart. His wife Gladys (Greig) passed away
in 1975 and his best friend, Ethel Fletcher, passed away in 1997.
Fred was born February 24, 1911 at Weyburn. He attended South
Weyburn School and earned a reputation as an exceptional math
student and a great speller. He played hockey and baseball as
a young man and continued to avidly enjoy both games as a spectator
until his passing. After finishing school in 1924, he held many
jobs in the Weyburn area and throughout Saskatchewan. He often
talked about working on the Wascana Creek dredging project, and
the attempt he made to homestead further north. The winter days
of hauling grain to Weyburn for Mr. Castle with a team and sleigh
were also memorable. In 1937, Fred left the dry prairies to try
his luck in Sudbury, ON. Since Fred had experience with heavy
machinery, he quickly worked his way up after landing a job in
the mine. Fred's brother, Jim, and his young family, joined Fred
in Sudbury in 1940. After working in the mine for a number of
years, Fred and Jim started their own excavation contracting
business. West Bros. was a successful enterprise until Jim's
untimely death in 1955. Fred continued the business alone until
1969, when he retired to Weyburn because of Gladys' ill health.
Even though they had lived in Ontario for thirty years, the frequent
visits back to Weyburn for family events and special holidays
enabled them to maintain close family ties and important friendships.
Christmas was never quite Christmas if Gladys and Fred weren't
with Mabel, Irma, Jean and Mrs. Greig - and most years they were.
The best years were the ones when they stayed for a month instead
of a week. Seasonal work certainly had its benefits. Since Fred
and Gladys had maintained close friendships with many of their
former classmates and their siblings, retirement in Weyburn was
an easier adjustment. He always kept busy, at first buying and
renovating houses for resale, later on tending and harvesting
a huge garden on the West farm. He enjoyed the camaraderie with
his hunting buddies while hunting birds each fall, and often
talked about the trip to Manitoba for Canada Geese one year.
He even tried his hand at golf. Fred was a man of many talents
who was never too busy to help out. He was a perfectionist who
felt every job should be done well. He welded, renovated, refinished
furniture, and did some upholstery. His home is full of his special
touches. Fred loved to garden, often starting many of his own
bedding plants in January in his sunny dining room. The time
spent with Ethel Fletcher was Fred's true retirement. They had
many similar interests: cribbage, traveling, music, friends,
eating out and of course, the Blue Jays games on TV. The big
extended family birthday suppers in the 80's were memorable events,
often they ended with cards late into the night. In more recent
years, as Fred's health began to decline, he found it very difficult
to limit his activity. He continued to look after his house and
yard and rarely asked for help with even the strenuous tasks.
He greatly feared that the day might come when he would be forced
to move from his beautiful home or when he could no longer drive
his much loved Roadmaster. Other than a couple of brief hospital
stays, Fred was granted that wish. He died in hospital with his
nephew Phillip and Rev. John Ferrier by his side. Funeral service
was held Wednesday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. from Knox Presbyterian
Church, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment
followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Honorary pallbearers
were: George Crane, Elmer Surring, Monty Adolph, Jim Giroux,
Gordon Giroux, Jack Dow, Charlie Meek and Merle Leavens. The
active pallbearers were: Larry Fletcher, Doug Conn, Ron Fellner,
Travis Mealing, Brad Tindall and Tom Minard. For friends so wishing,

Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, in his memory. Arrangements
were entrusted to Myron Fletcher, Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd.,
Weyburn.
-
- When I must leave you for a little while,
- Please do not grieve and shed wild tears,
- And hug your sorrow to you through the years.
- But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
- And for my sake and in my name
- Live on and do all things the same.
- Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
- But fill each waking hour in useful ways.
- Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer,
- And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
- And never, never be afraid to die,
- For I am waiting for you in the sky.
