Lance Clarence
Caldwell
- Lance Clarence Caldwell of Trossachs, SK passed away peacefully
at the Weyburn General Hospital on Monday, August 23, 1999 at
the age of 74 years and 11 months, after a lengthy battle with
cancer. He was born September 11, 1924 and was raised in the
Radville area. He attended Great West School. As a young man,
he worked on various threshing crews for John Eckbloom, Godfrey
Thompson and Sherm VanDeSype, hauling bundles and doing the farming
with his team of horses. He also took pride in some of his coyote
hunts with his hounds. In 1948, Lance ventured to poplar Point,
MB where he worked two summers at the PFRA for Tom Ladler. He
then returned to Carievale where he worked one summer for his
uncles. In 1952, he ventured into farming in the Clearfield area
for three years before returning home. On April 10, 1956 he married
Irene Verbeurgt of Ceylon. On April 16, 1956 they moved to a
farm north of Trossachs where he resided at the present time.
Lance enjoyed playing hockey out on the slough in the crisp winter
air and in summer baseball. He also enjoyed playing cards, attending
horse sales and rodeos, and most of all spending time with his
animals and entertaining his grandchildren. Lance was predeceased
by his parents, George on July 25, 1975 and Wilhelmina on August
20, 1981, brother-in-law, Lyle Guest on November 10, 1979, mother-in-law
Gabriella Verbeurgt, December 16, 1978, father-in-law, Albert
Verbeurgt, May 13, 1991 and one young brother-in-law, Douglas.
Lance is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Irene of Trossachs;
one daughter, Elaine (Gordon) Myer and children Tyler and Leanne
of Weyburn; three sons: George Caldwell and daughter Bobie (Barb
Simpson and Christan), Lorna Caldwell of Weyburn; Blaine Caldwell
(Wendy Melton and Chase) and his children: Dustin of Trossachs,
Lacey and Tifane of Nelson, BC, Karen Caldwell of Nelson, BC;
Roland (Brenda) and son Brodie as well as step-grandchildren:
Chantel, Melissa and Joseph Eberts of Trossachs; three brothers:
Ken Caldwell, Lloyd (Rosalind) Caldwell and Allan (Karen) Caldwell,
all of Radville; two sisters: Inez Guest of Trossachs, and Jean
(Phil) Stratulat of Radville; four brothers-in-law: Prosper of
Ceylon, Arnold (Eileen) of Weyburn, Gilbert (Rosemarie) of Ceylon
and Howard (Kathleen) of Airdrie, AB; one sister-in-law, Doreen
(Barry) Armstrong of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; and numerous other
relatives, nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Thursday,
August 26, at 2:00 p.m. from All Saints Anglican Church, Weyburn,
with Rev. David Holmes officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest
Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to
be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Dennis
Davenport, Floyd Cleveland, Arvid Thue, Ralph Hoffart, Victor
Tessier and James Beard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Palliative Care Unit of Weyburn General Hospital
or to the Allan Blair Memorial Cancer Clinic of Regina, in his
memory. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral
Home Inc., Weyburn.
Muriel L. Potts
- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Muriel L. Potts (nee Fleming). Muriel found everlasting peace
and comfort on Tuesday, August 24, 1999. She was predeceased
by her parents, Herb and Helen Fleming of Radville, SK; one brother,
Bill, son Kenneth Potts in 1962, and a daughter, Sharon Johnson
in 1991. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband
of 59 years, John Potts, daughter Connie (Roger) Phillips of
Black Diamond, AB; son-in-law, Jerry Johnson of Swift River Lodge,
Yukon; four grandchildren: Kelly Johnson of Saskatoon, Rob (Erin)
Johnson of Whitehorse, Yukon, Ken (Sheila) Farr of Kelowna, and
Dan (Victoria) Phillips of Lethbridge, AB; great grandchildren:
Dustin and Danielle Farr and Levi Johnson; two sisters, Lorraine
(Arnold) Fournier of Maberly, ON, and Rosella (John) Erickson
of Radville; four brothers: Gordon (Blanche) Fleming and Glen
(Millie) Fleming, both of Weyburn; Lyle Fleming of Fort Saskatchewan,
AB; and Roy (Karen) Fleming of Saskatoon; one sister-in-law,
Leola Fleming of Gainsborough; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Muriel Lucy Potts was born December 21, 1918 in Radville. She
spent her early years growing up on the family farm at Brooking.
She attended Buffalo Valley school and acquired her grade 8,
continuing with correspondence to receive her grade nine. Muriel's
greatest love was family. She met and married John Potts, July
29, 1940. They had 59 years together before her passing. In addition
to providing her family with constant enjoyment and love, she
loved bowling. She managed Pal's lanes for 11 years during which
time she helped organize YBC bowling in Weyburn. Muriel's favorite
saying was "Bowling should be for fun, exercise and socializing."
She continued to enjoy watching bowling after she was unable
to participate herself due to health problems. In fact, Muriel
loved all sports from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Edmonton Oilers.
It was great fun to listen to Muriel criticize the referees and
umpires because they made a call she didn't agree with. Muriel
will be missed for her quick smile and loving, caring ways. She's
gone but hardly forgotten. Funeral service was held Saturday,
August 28 at 10:00 a.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn,
with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest
Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to
be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Duane,
Kenneth, Larry, Kevin and Lorne Fleming and Chris Payak. For
friends so wishing, donations may be made in her memory to the
ALS Society (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Arrangements were entrusted
to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd. Weyburn.
- Murray Martin Wiles
- On Thursday, August 19, 1999 Murray Martin Wiles of Weyburn,
passed away at the age of 53 years. Predeceased by his father,
Roy Wiles. Murray is survived by his wife, Diane Wiles of Weyburn;
his mother Gladys Wiles of Ogema; his brothers and sisters: Bruce
(Ann) Wiles of Moose Jaw; Barry (Marlene) Wiles of Ogema; Della
(Mel) Kazell of Saskatoon; and Lewis (Jennie) Wiles of Regina;
stepchildren: Joanne Mallory of Regina; Bob Mallory of Calgary;
Gerry (Denna) Mallory of Weyburn; Ken (Jacquie) Mallory of Weyburn;
and Jim (Tina) Mallory of Parry, SK; 14 step grandchildren; as
well as many nieces and nephews. Murray was born October 19,
1945 in Ogema. He was raised on a farm eight miles west of Ogema
and attended Mount Joy School in rural Ogema and then high school
in Ogema. As a teenager he was interested in electricity, and
had his room set up to make thunder bolts. He moved into Ogema
in 1976 and lived there until 1994 when he moved to Weyburn.
On November 12, 1983 he married Diane Sauve in Ogema. Murray
enjoyed restoring antiques and working on and fixing old radios.
He once took a week to get an old Rumley tractor ready, then
took three days to get it to Ogema along with his cousin Brian.
He enjoyed music, playing the guitar, organ, piano and trumpet.
He was very involved with and dedicated to the Deep South Pioneer
Museum, and was a past president. Murray attended Calvary Baptist
Church in Weyburn. A memorial service was held Tuesday, August
24 at 2:00 p.m. from the Legion Hall in Ogema with Rev. Christa
Eidsness and Pastor Rob Ogilvie officiating. Interment followed
in Ogema Cemetery. All those in attendance were considered to
be honorary pallbearers. For friends so wishing, donations may
be made in his memory to the Angus Campbell Centre, Box 118,
Moose Jaw, Sask. S6H 4N7. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher
Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
- Theresa Marie Jalbert
- On Tuesday, August 24, 1999, Theresa Marie Jalbert, late
of Weyburn, and formerly of Radville, passed away at Hill Top
Manor in Weyburn at the age of 76 years. Predeceased by her husband,
Emile in 1987; one son, Leon in 1972, three sisters: Aline, Leonie
and Solange; and one brother, John. Theresa leaves to mourn,
her son, Maurice (Marilyn) Jalbert of Regina, and their four
children: Michelle, Marnelle (Gary) Perras, and Malinda, all
of Calgary, AB; and Marcie of Regina; four brothers: Henry (Adrienne)
Bourassa of Radville; Roger (Annette) Bourassa of Legal, AB;
Paul (Arndree) Bourassa of Weyburn; and Maurice (Sophie) Bourassa
of Saskatoon; five sisters: Blanche Gratton of Montreal, PQ;
Yvonne (Lou) Herbert of Calgary; Celine (Chris) Hager of Legal;
Marie Emma (Real) Montbleau of Montreal; Jeannette (Emilian)
Dedora of Lake Alma, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers
were said Thursday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. from Holy Family Roman
Catholic Church, Radville. The Mass of Christian Burial was held
Friday, August 27 at 2:00 p.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic
Church, Radville, with Father Joe Frey celebrant. Interment followed
in Laurier Cemetery, Radville. Pallbearers were Alphonse Bourassa,
Andrew Bourassa, Marius Bourassa, Marcel Jalbert, Greg Dedora
and Brian Ward. The ushers were Euclide Jalbert and Hughie Verhelst.
Those wishing to express their sympathy may donate to the Canadian
Cancer Society in her memory. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne
Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn.
- Myrtle Lena Olson
- On Friday, August 20, 1999, Myrtle Lena Olson, of Weyburn,
passed away at the Weyburn Special Care Home at the age of 92
years. Predeceased by her father and mother: Oscar and Augusta
Olson, her husband, Adolph Olson, one son, Allen "Buddy",
one daughter Beryl, five brothers, three sisters and one son-in-law,
William Allen. Myrtle is survived by her sons and daughters:
Irene (Kerry) Moffatt of Saskatoon; Margaret Allen of the Plains,
OH; R. Marvin (Marilyn) Olson of Oakville, ON; Bob (Betty Lou)
Olson of Tribune; grandchildren: John (Amelia) and Carl Moffatt,
Carol and David Olson, Brent and Liana Olson, three great grandchildren:
Lynn, Kris and Juli Moffatt, three sisters: Irene Lader and Mable
Streblow, both of Rhinelander, WI; and Florence Emond of Riverton,
WY; as well as many nieces and nephews. Myrtle Lena Olson was
born December 1, 1906 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin to Oscar and
Augusta Olson, one of a family of 12. She immigrated to Canada
and married Adolph Olson November 6, 1924. He predeceased her
in September 1979. Together they farmed west of Tribune in the
hills of the Greendale district. To them were born six children,
Irene, Allen (Buddy deceased), Margaret, Marvin, Robert and Beryl
(deceased). Myrtle lead an active life, and filled her family's
lives with stories and songs. Her good cooking attracted many
passers-by. Hospitality and generosity were some of her gifts.
She became a Christian after coming to Canada, and took an active
part in her church, teaching Sunday School, even into her 80's.
During retirement years she enjoyed travelling to visit her family,
and especially trips to her old home beside Bundy Lake in Wisconsin.
Whenever possible she loved spending time with her six grandchildren:
John and Carl, Brent and Liana, Carol and David, and three great
grandchildren, Lynn, Kris and Juli Moffatt. After 92 years, she
leaves us with many memories. Funeral service was held Monday,
August 23 at 1:00 p.m. from Beaubier Pentecostal Church, Beaubier,
with Pastor G. Kerry Moffatt officiating. Interment followed
in Emmanual Lutheran Cemetery, Maxim. Pallbearers were Marvin
Olson, Robert Olson, John Moffatt, Brent Olson, David Olson and
Carl Moffatt. For those wishing to make donations in her memory,
contributions to the Gideons would be appreciated. Arrangements
were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
- Howard R. Lutz
- Mr. Howard R. Lutz, beloved gem of a husband of 48 years
to Celia of Medicine Hat, AB, passed away peacefully with his
family by his side on Friday, August 27, 1999 after a long and
courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 73 years. Howard
also leaves to cherish his memory, three daughters and one son;
Brenda (Syd) Cuthbert of Burnaby, BC; Barry (Teresa) Lutz of
Winfield, BC; Sheila (Earl) Carlson of Oyen, AB; and Charlene
Lutz-Graveline and her special friend, Manny Rieder, Medicine
Hat; nine grandchildren: Christopher Cuthbert, Devon and Kendal
Lutz, Melissa, Brent and Derik Carlson, Travis, Rochelle, and
Ryder Graveline; his mother-in-law, Katherine Melle of Medicine
Hat; three brothers, Willard (Betty Ann) Lutz of Regina; Ron
(Burnelle) Lutz of Weyburn; and Leonard (Ann) Lutz of Cincinnati,
Ohio; two sisters: Myrel Earlywine of Port Angeles, Wash.; and
Fern Snell of Indian Head; a brother-in-law, Ray Huycke of Nobleton,
ON; as well as many nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased
by his parents, Guy and Myrtle Lutz; and one sister, Evelyn Huycke.
Howard was born June 22, 1926 in McTaggart, SK. He married the
former Celia Melle on October 3, 1951 in Minton, SK. For 35 years
he worked in the oilfield industry and then for the Cypress School
Division. Howard retired in1991 and continued to make Medicine
Hat home. He was a member of the Elks Club for many years and
spent many hours at the Royal Canadian Legion playing cards and
visiting. He served as a volunteer driver for the Legion and
enjoyed his many excursions. The coffee shop was a favorite place
for Howard as well. Howard loved life - talking and visiting
with family, friends and whomever he came in contact. He always
had a story to tell and a smile on his face. A very caring nature
and unlimited kindness were Howard's greatest attributes. He
will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. Vigil
Rites (prayers) will be said at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel,
Medicine Hat, Wednesday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. The funeral
service will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 1250
Division Avenue S.W., Medicine Hat, Thursday, September 2 at
1:00 p.m. with Father Ian Gagne officiating. Interment will follow
in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. As an expression of
sympathy those wishing to remember Mr. Howard Lutz may do so
with a gift to the Palliative Care Unit, c/o Medicine Hat Regional
Hospital, 666-5th Street S.W., Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 4H6. Funeral
