- Bessie Ellen Craig
Mrs. Bessie Ellen May Craig passed away peacefully at Souris
Valley Extended Care Hospital, Weyburn, Tuesday, August 24, 1999
at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Earl Craig.
Bessie leaves to cherish her memory, her four daughters: Dorothy
(Dorland) Tindall of Weyburn; Edna Hemphill of Weyburn; Margaret
Uytterhagen of Weyburn; and Eileen Garling of Estevan; and her
one son, Bob (Marlene) Craig of Midale. Bessie also leaves to
cherish in her memory 22 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren;
ten great great grandchildren; one sister, Edna Ames of Calgary;
as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bessie Ellen May Craig
was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Earl Craig; three
brothers: Harry Smith, Bryon Smith, and Sydney Smith; and one
sister, Doris Middleton. The former Bessie Ellen May Smith was
born July 10, 1908 in Winnipeg, MB, the first of six children
born to Amos and Julie (Daniels) Smith. She spent her early years
in Manitoba and when her father did not return home from the
war, her mother made the decision to move her young family to
Wainwright, AB. Grandma grew up in the Anglican Church and enjoyed
attending church with her mother and siblings. She also took
piano lessons as a child with her mother's insistence. In her
teenage years she did sewing and hairdressing for the ladies
in the community for extra money. In the 1920's she boarded the
train to Saskatchewan and it was at this time that she met her
future husband, Earl Craig. She and Earl were married on July
27, 1928 in Weyburn. They were blessed with four daughters and
one son. Bessie enjoyed taking her children to White Rock School
for church services and took great happiness in singing hymns
while cooking and baking in the kitchen on the farm. Together
they farmed in Midale and upon retirement in 1966, they moved
to Weyburn. Bessie enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, sewing
in her younger years and washing and meticulously ironing her
dresses. She took great pride in her appearance and always enjoyed
going shopping for new dresses. She also loved to play bingo
and loved to go 'bingoing' with her daughters or any of the grandchildren.
In 1988 Bessie moved from her suite into a condo after she fell
and broke her hip. In 1995 she moved to Parkway Lodge and in
1998 took up residence at Souris Valley Extended Care Hospital.
Bessie enjoyed the company of all of the nurses on 2B and considered
each of them a part of her extended family. She always commented
on the good care she received. Bessie loved to be around her
family and grandchildren who were very dear to her, she always
remarked on the large number of grandchildren that she had and
was proud of all of them. She was very proud of the fact that
the Craig legacy would continue with the birth of her great grandson
Denzel Craig in March 1999. Grandma, you will be missed - We
Love You. Funeral service was held Saturday, August 28, 1999
at 6:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Pastor
Larry Rempel officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial
Gardens, Weyburn. Active pallbearers were her grandsons: Brad
Tindall, Ron Carlson, Jim Garling, Kiley Craig, Troy Craig and
Jim Hubbs. Those wishing to express their sympathy may donate
to the Alzheimer Association of Sask. or to a charity of your
choice. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral
Home Inc., Weyburn.
- Marjorie Marele Hughes
Marjorie Marele Hughes (Sturgeon) passed away on August 21, 1999,
at the age of 61 after a very courageous battle with cancer.
Her parents, William and Olive Sturgeon and one brother Nevelen
predeceased Marge. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband,
Garry of Midale, and their children: Catherine (Stanley) Stapleton
of Edmonton, AB; Stephen (Joanne) Hughes of Fairview, AB; and
Rebecca (Ian) St-Laurent of Edmonton; grandchildren: Chantalle
and Natasha Stapleton, Stacy, Shawn, Brendan, Kristen, Tiffany
and Kimberly Hughes; one sister, Kathleen (Jack) Hancock of Halbrite,
SK; one brother, William (Esther) Sturgeon of Midale; many nieces,
nephews and friends. Marge was born in Regina on April 14, 1938.
She was raised at Pleasant View Farm near Halbrite. She took
all her schooling in Halbrite earning many awards at school.
She graduated one year earlier than normal. Marge had a fascination
with the unknown and spiritual worlds. As a child she would sit
on one of two large rocks at the farm and gaze at the stars.
She loved to read. This passion for reading stayed with her right
up to her passing. She met Garry Hughes of Huntoon area while
visiting at her brother's farm nearby. After two and a half years
of dating, they were married May 25, 1957 at the United Church
in Halbrite. They made their home in Midale until 1978 when they
moved back to Pleasant View Farm. Marge worked at the Midale
Post Office for 38 years as a postal assistant. She enjoyed the
office work of the post office and the fellowship of the customers.
While the children grew up Marge enjoyed being apart of their
lives by being a Brownie and Girl Guide leader and most definitely
a hockey mom. She enjoyed the family outings, going skidooing
and having winter barbecues and also the annual fishing trip.
Marge always went out on the boat, but it was found out in later
years that it was only for the children's safety. She was an
avid sewer, making clothes and doll clothes for the family. She
enjoyed her crafts and music. There were often jam sessions with
the accordion or piano with Garry on the guitar. As the children
started leaving home her interests changed to include collecting
and making dolls, training and showing dogs and desktop publishing
on the computer. Marge was a major league shopper. She was a
member of several groups: Souris Valley Antique Association;
Halbrite Craft Club; Halbrite Sunshiners Club; Weyburn Twirlers
Dance Club; Weyburn Oldtime Dance Club. She was a member of the
Grace United Church in Weyburn. Funeral service was held Tuesday,
August 24 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with
Bill and Marilyn Corkum as officiating ministers. At Marge's
request, Bill spoke to the grandchildren leading into the hymn,
"In the Bulb there is a Flower." Interment followed
in Halbrite Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were those able to
sit with Marge both at home and in the hospital. Active pallbearers
were Shawn Hughes, Brendan Hughes, Don Sturgeon, Ken Sturgeon,
Kelly Gill and Gary Sidloski. The Souris Valley Antique Association,
Halbrite Sunshiners and Halbrite Craft Club served lunch at the
Midale Civic Centre. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher
Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
- John Cuddie Dow
On Sunday, August 29, 1999, John Cuddie (Jack) Dow, late of Weyburn,
passed away at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 87 years.
Predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Dot Dow; wife Irene in
1981; one brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Jean Ledingham;
and a nephew, Harvey Ledingham. Jack is survived by one daughter,
Patricia (Don) Funk of Pincher Creek, AB; three grandsons: Terry
(Collette) Funk and their daughter, Melissa of Edmonton, AB;
Jeff Funk of Edmonton; and Darren Funk of Innisfail, AB; two
sisters-in-law: Ethel (Alf) Arendt of Havre, MT; and Elsie (Carl)
Hoover of Racine, MN; and special friend, Doreen Wagner of Estevan.
Jack was born October 4, 1911 at McTaggart, SK. He was an only
child, his parents having come to Canada in 1910 from New Zealand.
All of his relatives remained in New Zealand. Jack attended public
school in Goodwater, SK and high school in Weyburn. On September
24, 1938 he married Olive Irene Ledingham. They farmed at Delight
and Colgate before moving to Weyburn in 1951. Jack then worked
for Barber Motors for 20 years as parts manager. Jack enjoyed
playing cards, especially cribbage, fishing, and hunting big
game and birds. He received his pilot's licence in 1968 and enjoyed
flying his airplane. In 1986 he took a trip to New Zealand to
visit his relatives and see the place called 'Dowfield' where
his dad was born and raised. Jack was a member of the United
Church, and a lifelong member of the Elks. He belonged to the
Masons and Shriners, was past president of the Agricultural Society,
and a charter member and first president of the Colgate Credit
Union. A memorial service was held Friday, September 3, at 2:00
p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating
minister. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn.
All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers.
For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to
the Grace United Church Building Fund or to the Kidney Foundation
of Canada. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels
Ltd., Weyburn.
- Leslie Albert Wright
On Tuesday, August 3, 1999, Leslie Albert Wright, late of Weyburn,
passed away at Souris Valley Extended Care Centre, at the age
of 83 years. Predeceased by his father and mother, Ephraim and
Zella Wright; and four brothers; Melville, Leo, Ralph and Rodger.
Leslie is survived by his wife, May Wright of Weyburn; his son,
Darcy (Denise) Wright of Estevan; his grandchildren: Michael
of Regina; Dyana of Estevan; and Daryl of Estevan; one sister,
Hannah Morrish of Thunder Bay, ON; one sister-in-law, Laura Wright
of Thunder Bay, ON; one brother-in-law, Reg (Edna) Worton of
Devonshire, England; special friend, Helen Chambers of Kemptonville,
ON; as well as many nieces and nephews. Leslie Albert Wright
was born July 13, 1916 at Montmartre, SK. He was raised on the
farm and received his grade seven education. Leslie enjoyed working
on the farm as he loved anything connected with the land and
nature. He helped build highway 48 near Montmartre with a team
and wagon. He lived at Wolseley prior to enlisting, and served
from 1940 to 1945 with the first Canadian Survey Regiment R.C.A.
in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland.
On September 25, 1943 Leslie married May Alice Worton at St.
John's Anglican Church, Frederick Crescent Brixton SW 9 in London,
England. They lived at Huronville, Moffat, Greenville areas,
Kayville for six years, Creelman for six months, Handsworth for
two years, Oungre for 12 years and Weyburn for 20 years. Leslie
was a grain buyer from 1957 to 1978, but always was a farmer
at heart. He married couples on farms from 1946 to 1957, and
was a hunter, fisherman and horseman. He enjoyed golfing, curling,
horseshoes and travelling all across Canada. He also enjoyed
baseball and was a left handed baseball pitcher. His whole life
was a special event and he had a great love for his family. A
memorial service was held Saturday, September 4 at 10:00 a.m.
from the auditorium of the Royal Canadian legion in Weyburn,
with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Green
Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. For friends so wishing, donations
may be made in his memory to the Legion Memorial Fund. Arrangements
were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
