OBITUARIES

Rikki Murray

On February 2, 2000, after a long battle with cancer, Rikki Murray gently passed into God's care to be with her grandfather Bill Murray and uncle, Rick Murray. Rikki was born March 27, 1987, with dark eyes and long eyelashes. She always had a lot of energy and brought joy and completeness to the entire family. On August 14, 1998, she was diagnosed with Glioblas-toma Multiforme, a type of cancer. Rikki had a lot of determination and strength to fight the cancer but on December 17, 1999 they stopped her treatments as nothing else could be done to save her. All of the chemotherapy and radiation she had been through had failed. Rikki then returned home to spend her last days on earth surrounded by her family and friends. She died peacefully, ready to go with the angels, with her mom, dad and sisters giving her love and encouragement. Rikki was loved by a very supportive family. Her mom and dad, Brad and Brenda Murray, two sisters Melissa of Saskatoon and Jodie of Weyburn, grandmother Edie Murray and grandparents Dorland and Dorothy Tindall. Rikki leaves many uncles and aunts to mourn: Bruce (Debbie) Murray, Brent (Shonna) Murray, Brad (Wendy) Tindall, Jill (Dave) Kirby, Jo-Anne (Terry) Hopkins, Karen (Craig) Hall, Dawn Tindall and Henry Tindall. Her cousins, who all loved her, will miss her witty sense of humour and charm. She will also be missed by her best friend Cassia Johnston. The entire community of Weyburn, who through their support, were whole-heartedly behind her, as were her teachers and classmates of Assiniboia Park School and Weyburn Junior High School. We are forever grateful to physicians Dr. Boyd Stewart of Weyburn, Dr. Goh of Regina and Dr. Wirrel of Saskatoon, who all were more than doctors to her. A special thanks to Cheryl Mahoney for many, many hours of physical therapy and strong friendship to Rikki, Harriet Greenhow for all the moral support, Collen and Nancy, the nurses from the cancer clinic for compassionate care and friendship. Rikki's great attitude, self-esteem and great amount of courage through this deadly disease inspired so many people. She did what she could and what she wanted to, she was very brave and throughout the past year and a half she taught us so much. Rikki's love was hockey that she played for six years. She liked the fact that her hockey team was named after her - "The Rockets" was her nickname. This year she received a team fleece. Rikki was an exceptional athlete in every sport she attempted. Her favorite sports were: hockey, basketball, volleyball, golf, soccer, baseball and fishing. She was a collector of many things - her number one collection: her Beanie Babies, given to her by family and many kind friends. Rikki got her first job when she was eight years old - she delivered papers for the Leader-Post. She enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, playing cards and doing all types of crafts. Rikki definitely enjoyed life to the fullest. Every day was an adventure to her whether it was to see how much trouble she could get her sisters into, or what new things she could learn or how many new people she could meet. The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada continues to spread Rikki's happiness to other children in need. Funeral service was held Saturday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment at a later date. Honorary pallbearers were the Best Value Rockets hockey team, teachers and fellow students. The active pallbearers were Mark Roberts, Garth Downton, Tony Stobart, Jim St. Onge, Larry Olfert and Lyman Sargent. For friends so wishing, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada or to the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic, Regina, SK in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.

Joseph August DeRoose
On February 15, 1922, the first bundle of joy arrived to Rene and Helen DeRoose, at the family farm. After receiving his elementary education at Lacadia School, Joseph August DeRoose helped on the family farm. His greatest joy was looking after animals and especially his dogs. He pampered them as you would a child and in return they were always there to welcome him home. Although Joe never married, he had a great fondness for children, especially his nieces and nephews. They took great delight in his sense of humor or when they threw their arms around him and giggled when they could feel his 'love handles', seeing Joe was of rotund build. Joe was the type of person who always showed love and affection for his family, but at times he would like to show off his authority which was understood in good faith. Not only family members but also the young people of the community will remember Joe for his teasing, but all knew it was meant in jest. Joe was never known for extravagance, but always enjoyed the simple things in life. The family will treasure the memories of his hard work and efforts that he put in on the family farm, which he took over in 1974 after the passing of his father. He loved the soil, and always made due, repairing as needed. He enjoyed raising cattle, almost spoiling them, and was good at delivering calves. He drove a lot of horses during plowing, disking and seeding in the early years. As he was the oldest, he helped his other brothers and sisters get started in their lives, as they left the farm. He was a good friend with his neighbors on the farm, and did not want to leave the farm to live in town. He rented the land because of ill health, but continued to help if he could. Joe found everlasting peace on January 31, 2000 just 15 days short of his 78th birthday. He was predeceased by his parents, Rene and Helen; a sister, Margaret, and brothers, Adolph and Remie. To mourn his passing he leaves his brother, Oscar DeRoose; sisters: Mary DeRoose, Alice (Roy) Picard, Louise (Otto) Hersche, Camilla Dionne, Anne DeRoose, Martha (Lionel) Rainville and Emma (Don) Gilles; two sisters-in-law, Valerie DeRoose and Maria DeRoose; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Prayers were said Wednesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Radville. The funeral mass was held Thursday, February 3 at 11:00 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Radville, with Father Brian Meredith celebrant. A private family interment followed in Ceylon Cemetery, Ceylon. The active pallbearers were: Rene DeRoose, Sidney DeRoose, Andrew DeRoose, Louis DeRoose, Gerald Rainville and Rodney Lazurko. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to the Radville Marian Health Centre, Palliative Care, Radville. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
