Delmar
Jack Kilback
On Friday, February 25, 2000, Delmar Jack Kilback, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 65 years. Predeceased by his mother and father, Jacob and Emma Kilback, one brother, Elwood, and a niece, Joanne Gess. Delmar is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Doreen of Weyburn; daughter Cheryl (Sheldon) Leffler of Weyburn, and their children: Janell, Raeanne and Brendon; son, Jeff (Patricia) Kilback of Weyburn and their children: Lindsey and Chantel; brothers and sisters: Harold (Annabelle) Kilback of Weyburn; Myrna (Tom) Jenkins of Regina; Robert (Candace) Kilback of Hamilton, ON; sister-in-law, Gerda Kilback of Thompson, MB; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elvin (Arlene) Gess of Medicine Hat, AB; Doug (Jeannette) Gess of Edmonton, AB; Cliff (Lylah) Gess of Regina; Bev Gess of Vernon, BC; special uncles, Albert Domes of Yellow Grass and Bill (Emma) Domes of Assiniboia; special friends Ray and Verna Daae of Torquay; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special winter friends in Texas. Delmar Kilback was born on the family farm at Yellow Grass on September 23, 1934. He attended North Brokenshell School near Trossachs. As a young man, Delmar worked on various farms in the Weyburn/Trossachs area. From 1961 to 1968 he worked at the Weyburn Union Hospital. In 1968 he started with SaskTel until ill health forced him into long-term disability and eventually retirement in 1993. Delmar married Doreen Gess, October 2, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church in Weyburn. Delmar and Doreen had a very special marriage and were always together. They raised two children, Cheryl and Jeff. In October 1999, they celebrated 40 years of marriage by spending a special weekend together with children and grandchildren. Their five grandchildren were very close to Grandpa. Grandpa would drop everything at the drop of a hat to drive them anywhere or to babysit them. Church concerts, school concerts, piano recitals, and their hockey games were of special interest. Annual 'special days' with Grandma and Grandpa were a favored highlight - to the waterslides, South Hill, the park, Rucker's, sleepovers, anywhere, all together. Delmar was a regular communicant and worshipper. His involvement in the church consisted of usher, offering counter, and church council member. Fishing and camping were his favorite interests. He loved sitting around campfires and visiting with family and friends. They camped throughout Saskatchewan and western Canada, venturing as far as Prince George, BC, Dawson Creek, BC, to Yellowstone National Park and the Black Hills in the US, and other destinations on various holidays. Summer weekends were spent at the cabin at Katepwa Lake. Delmar and Doreen also spent some enjoyable winters in Texas and made many special friends. Delmar was a great fix-it man and nothing seemed too difficult for him to tackle. When something was broken his grandchildren would say, "Give it to Grandpa - he can fix anything!" Delmar was always a hard worker. He took pride in looking after his equipment, vehicles, and possessions. He was especially good at taking care of lawns, gardens, and hedges. He was always neat and tidy - even meticulous - in his appearance, in his home, and with his vehicle and garage. Another of Delmar's hobbies was barbering, which he practiced on Jeff and his nephews when they were kids and later years his grandson, Brendon. He had his "regulars" in the extended family who would even wait for him to get back from Texas so Delmar could cut their hair. Delmar had a great sense of humour. He liked to play practical jokes on family and friends. Even minor accidents and minor injuries could somehow get everybody laughing when Delmar was involved. It seems that Jeff has inherited Delmar's sense of humour, and so has Chantel so he had to take his share of teasing too. His favorite sayings reflect his sense of humour: "Toodle-loo" when you were leaving, and his autograph "Roses are red, Violets are blue, I like cornflakes, Can you swim?" His little jokes and teases made him a favorite and special uncle to many nieces and nephews. Delmar was not only a very dedicated and caring father and father-in-law, but also a caring son and son-in-law who looked after and helped out both his and Doreen's parents when they needed support. He always tried to help in any way he could - showing kindness to everyone and visiting friends and family. Through his many operations both minor and serious, Delmar always kept a positive outlook and never complained. His family was his most important interest. By his example and practice he has taught them to care for and respect people, to be hospitable, and to spend quality time with good humour. Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Ron Bestvater and Pastor Larry Rempel officiating. Sheldon Leffler read the eulogy and Jeff Kilback shared special memories of his father. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Ray Arndt, Trevor Gess, Curtis Kilback, Bob McPhee, Lee Bowerin, Joe Jenkins and Ben Rohluff. For friends so wishing, donations may be made to the Gideons or to Weyburn and District United Way, in his memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
