Gordon
McKenzie Jacobs
On Monday, March 13, 2000, Gordon McKenzie Jacobs, late of
Weyburn, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital, at the age
of 77 years. Predeceased by his parents, Carl and Bertha Jacobs;
one brother, Clifford S. Jacobs in 1985; two sisters: Alice Siver
in 1993 and infant sister, Elsie Jacobs. Gordon is survived by
his loving wife, Edith Jacobs of Weyburn and their children: Diane
Jacobs of Vancouver, BC; Allan (Melanie) Jacobs of Balgonie, and
their children: Ben, Tanner and Scotia; and Leona Jacobs (Mark
Sandilands) of Lethbridge, AB; his brothers and sisters: Grace
Jacobs of Victoria, BC; Donald (Muriel) Jacobs of Elmville, ON;
Austin (Margit) Jacobs of Victoria, BC; Florence Jacobs of Orlando,
Florida; Vera Angelomatis of Vancouver, BC; and Ella (Peter) Zondervan
of Portage la Prairie, MB; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Gordon was born on August 10, 1922 in Antler, SK. His father,
Carl Jacobs, came to Antler from Minesing, ON to homestead in
1901. In 1905, Carl married Bertha Maw from Castlemore, ON. Gordon
had three brothers and six sisters. With this large a family,
there was lots of fun, rivalry and work. Gordon stayed home and
helped his father on the family farm until 1944, when Carl sold
the farm and retired to Victoria. Gordon was exempted from active
service during WWII because he was the remaining son on the farm.
His eldest brother, Clifford farmed at Trossachs, so Gordon came
west to help on the farm. He acquired some land of his own and
in 1946 moved to his own grain farm. He was 24 years old and loved
farming; he would for the rest of his life. Clifford had a couple
working for him from Midale, Lawrence and Faye Schulz. Faye had
a sister still at home and thought that Gordon should meet her.
She was Edith Scharnatta. Gordon and Edith were married on November
15, 1949. Their marriage was blessed with three children. As Gordon's
health declined, many people were there for him, Edith, who wanted
so badly to have him home with her, but when it became clear that
this would not be possible, moved him into the Weyburn Special
Care Home; Paul and Margaret Lukey their best friends; Doug and
Joan Beach and Don and Donna Dolgopol and many others in Gordon's
Fellowship who ensured his spiritual life was nurtured and fulfilled;
and the many, many others who know who they are, his family are
eternally grateful for your kind and generous support. Gordon
was very proud of his family, and they are enormously proud of
him. Funeral service was held Thursday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m.
from the T.C. Douglas Center, Weyburn, with Mr. Colin Brodie and
Mr. Jim Atcheson officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres

His Journey's Just Begun
Don't think of him as gone away-
His journey's just begun;
life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know, today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in hearts of those he touched-
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and he was loved so much.
-Ellen Brenneman

Martha (Marge) Fietz was born on January 2, 1921, the second youngest daughter of Emil and Wilhelmina Eckert. Marge grew up in the Browning, Kisbey areas before moving to Stoughton in 1937. In 1941 she married Manny Fietz and they farmed north of Stoughton until 1956 when they moved into town. When they moved to town, Marge worked at the restaurant at the Esso until it was sold and then she worked at Crossman's Poultry Farm as an egg scanner for 13 years, until ill health forced her to retire. In her younger years Marge was very active in community work such as the Lutheran Ladies Aid, Go Getters and the rink auxiliary. She also loved to watch hockey, curling and baseball and took great pride in watching her children take part in their activities. She especially enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden and always had an abundance of vegetables to share with her friends. Marge suffered a massive stroke in May of 1993 and has been a resident of Fillmore Union Health Center since November of 1993. On Friday, March 10, 2000, Werner William Schmidt, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 65 years. Werner was born January 7, 1935 in Weyburn. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Bernard and Wanda Schmidt. He attended Haig School and the Weyburn Collegiate. Upon his completion of high school he received his certificate as a registered psychiatric nurse from the Sask. Training School. When the school moved its training centre to Moose Jaw, Werner transferred to Moose Jaw. After a number of years he returned to work at the Sask. Mental Hospital in Weyburn. In 1967 he took a leave of absence from nursing to train for a career as a florist. He returned to Weyburn and opened Floral Arts Centre with Margaret Hamilton. After Margaret left the business, he continued on his own but found it too difficult for one person. He closed the shop and returned to nursing at the Weyburn Psych Centre until his retirement in 1987. At this time Werner's creative abilities came to light. He became interested in stained glass and took a class in Regina. From this point on Werner's creative energy knew no bounds. Friends and family proudly own pieces of his work. He loved a challenge in his art work and was always looking for a new ladder to climb. His yard and garden were his pride and joy. A common sight was to see him at your door with a bouquet of flowers or a bunch of fresh vegetables. He set his sight on a goal and quietly accomplished it to his own very high standards. Aside from all these accomplishments his love for his family came first and foremost. He will be greatly missed. He leaves to mourn his sisters: Edith Krueger of Weyburn; Gertrude Jackson of Penticton, BC; and Betty Schmidt of Weyburn; brothers Alfred (Fran) Schmidt of Kelowna, BC; Lucien (Mary) Schmidt of Moose Jaw; Eugene (Bubbins) Schmidt of Weyburn; and Erick (Susan) Schmidt of Weyburn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Thursday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. All those in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stained Glass Window Fund at Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn
