Edward Fred Altwasser (Jan. 12, 1914-May 4, 2000)

Thursday, May 4, 2000, Edward Fred Altwasser passed away in his 86th year. Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Bertha Altwasser; brothers Walter and Alvin Altwasser; sister Irene Altwasser; grandson Neil Altwasser as well as by several in-laws. Eddie is survived by his loving wife Esther of 61 years; his sons Garnet (Faye) Altwasser of Brooks, AB, Rodney (Faye) Altwasser of Yellow Grass; his daughter Marliss (Ernie) Smith of High River, AB; his grandchildren Brent (Tilly) Altwasser, Laura Marie (Vince) Elgersma, Joanne (Donovan) Saltvold, Mark Altwasser, Allen (Pam) Altwasser, Dean (Pam) Altwasser, Murray (Lisa) MacKinnon, Jim (Danielle) MacKinnon, Gordon (Leann) Smith, Juanita (James) Davis; his great grandchildren Myra Altwasser, Scott and Emma Lynn Elgersma, Justine and Carter Altwasser, Kane Altwasser, Dawson and Brittany MacKinnon, Justin, Cody and Tyler MacKinnon. He is also survived by his sisters Leona Gess and Elva (Carl) Timm of Saskatoon, and sister-in-law Colleen Altwasser of Yellow Grass. Eddie was born on January 12, 1914 at Beautiful Plain Farm located 5 miles west of Yellow Grass, the first child of Bertha (nee Heebner) and Fred Altwasser, Jr. He was educated at Beautiful Plains School, Yellow Grass High School and Luther College in Regina. He also studied commerce in Weyburn. For several years Eddie farmed with his father before establishing his own farm in 1937. His marriage to Esther Wilke on October 8, 1938 was blest with three children; Garnet, Rodney and Marliss. With dedication and pride for his community, Eddie served on the following: Beautiful Plains School Board, Yellow Grass Central School Board, Yellow Grass Rink Building Committee, Yellow Grass Rural Telephone Board, Yellow Grass Co-op, Yellow Grass Housing Authority, Yellow Grass Golden Harvest Club, Weyburn Housing Corporation, Luther College Board of Regents, Peace Lutheran Church Board and Sunday School superintendent, Yellow Grass. He was also a member of the Canadian Hereford Cattle Association and the Canadian Seed Growers Association. He raised cattle, hogs, turkeys, Rhode Island hens, sold hatching eggs and received prizes for flax and wheat seed at the Toronto Royal Fair. In 1965, he received the Master Farm Family award for District 7. Eddie and Esther moved to Yellow Grass in 1970 but he continued to farm with his son Rodney. Although Eddie endured numerous health problems throughout his life, he seldomly complained and continued to remain positive. His wisdom, love and encouragement will be missed by many. Funeral service was held Monday, May 8 at Peace Lutheran Church, Yellow Grass with Pastor Carol J. Dennison officiating. Pallbearers were Eddie's grandsons. Nick Brilz

Nick Brilz, beloved husband of Norma, of Radville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at the age of 86 years. Nick is survived by Norma, his loving wife of 54 years; six daughters: Carol (Jim) Eberle; Lorna (Ken) Greff; Gloria (Larry) Hamilton; Gayle (Richard) Holzer; Joann (Terry) Blair; and Sheila (Michael) Mack; fourteen grandchildren: Lori (Tim) Sullivan; Shawna (Tyler) Crawford; Nicole (Randy) Yanoshewski; Kent Greff; Kevin, Karen and Kelly Hamilton; Teena, Robert (Candida) and Brody Holzer; Adam and Amy Blair; Jessica and Nicholas Mack; seven great grandchildren: Ty, Riley Sullivan; Holly, Bryce Yanoshewski; Samantha, Courtney Crawford; and Julian Holzer; four sisters: Matilda (John) Espelitier; Mary Breakfield; Rose Kuntz and Ann Brilz; three brothers: Rufus, Matt and Ralph Brilz; one sister-in-law: Audrey (Joe) Barber; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Amelia Brilz; mother and father-in-law, George and Lillian Pepper; sisters: Ida and John Dembizak, Kate and Martin Fuhro, Paulina and Art Mahr; sisters-in-law: Ida, Rose, Balbina Brilz; brothers-in-law: Farmer Breakfield, Ed Kuntz, George and Theola Pepper and Jack Pepper. Nick was born August 27, 1913 in Lake Alma and farmed the family homestead until 1994 when he moved to Weyburn. Nick married Norma Pepper on November 28, 1945 and they raised six daughters. Nick was very active in the community, during his years in Lake Alma he served on the School Board and spent 15 years as a councilor. He was an active member of St. Blaze Parish and held a life membership in the Knights of Columbus. Nick's pastimes were fishing and music, and he loved to dance. He cherished the times with his girls and enjoyed the many visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nick always had a smile, a cheery 'hello' and many packages of gum for the children. Prayers were said Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. from Holy Family Parish Catholic Church, Radville. The funeral mass was held Saturday, May 6, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. from Holy Family Parish Catholic Church, Radville, with Father Brian Meredith Celebrant. Interment followed in Laurier Cemetery, Radville. The active pallbearers were his six sons-in-law: Jim Eberle, Larry Hamilton, Terry Blair, Ken Greff, Richard Holzer and Michael Mack. All Nick's grandchildren were considered to be honorary pallbearers. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to the Radville Marian Health Centre, Radville. Thomas "Tom" John Cox

On Tuesday, May 2, 2000, Thomas "Tom" John Cox, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 43 years. Predeceased by his grandparents, Alice and Hugh Cox, and Elizabeth and Chris Jensen; one nephew, Jayson Shupe; uncles and aunt, Jim Cox and Walter and Vida Jensen. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Brenda of Weyburn; children: Shella Jerome of Nanaimo; Terry-Lynne (Jeff) Schmidt of Kelowna; Jamie (Shannon) Geiger of Weyburn; grandchildren: Brandon and Alyssa Schmidt and Alyssa Jerome; his parents: John and Dorothy Cox of Weyburn; mother-in-law, Norma Lizuck of Weyburn; three sisters: Glenda (Guy) Shupe of Weyburn; Alice (Wayne) Bell of Kimberly, Cathy (Al) Flemmer of Calgary; four sisters-in-law: Cheryl (Dave) Rommann, Debbie (Gord) Busch, both of Weyburn, Donna (Bob Spriggs) Lizuck of Regina, Laurie (Kelly) Hilkewich of Weyburn; brother-in-law, Doug (Lynn) Lizuck of Libya; nieces and nephews: Jeff Heisler, Todd and Tara Busch, Kris, Kelly and Jesse Lizuck, Kurt Elmer, Carter and Alexandra Hilkewich, Tami and Todd Bell, Tana Shupe, Amanda and David (Rachelle) Flemmer; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Thomas John Cox was born August 23, 1957 at Midale. He grew up on the farm in Halbrite and received his education at Halbrite, Midale and Weyburn Comprehensive Schools. After a short time in Calgary, he returned to Weyburn where he began a 21-year career with the City of Weyburn. Tom was a volunteer fireman and enjoyed baseball, softball, golf, walking, woodworking, gardening and music. Tom lived his whole life in Weyburn and area and was a very well respected member of the community. Prayers were said Thursday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn. Funeral service was held Friday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Francis Hengen Celebrant and Rev. John Ferrier Officiant. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Honorary pallbearers were Tom's city co-workers. The active pallbearers were: Guy Shupe, Wayne Bell, Al Flemmer, Gord Busch, Dave Rommann and Kelly Hilkewich. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.


Herbert John Worden

Herbert John Worden passed away May 2, 2000 at the age of 91 years. He is predeceased by his parents, Gertrude and Edmond Worden; and by his wife, Gwen, who died on April 23, 2000. He is survived by his three daughters: Connie (Skip) Watson; Judy (Terry Mollory) Worden and Mary Lou (Brian) Ast; sister Erma Worden; grandchildren: Marcie, Rob (Jennifer) and Hal Watson; Jeffrey and Kevin Schreder; Heather, Joel and Keith Ast; two great grandchildren: Jacob and Alexandra Watson; brother-in-law, Keith (Doreen) Parsons of Abbotsford, BC. Herb was born on March 21, 1909 and lived his entire life in Weyburn. He joined his father in the hardware and grocery business in 1928 as a partner, and later as co-owner of The Worden Company, a pioneer business established in 1906. Throughout his life, he was an active member of the community serving in leadership roles, including president of the Weyburn Curling Club, Saskatchewan Curling Associa-tion, Fish and Game League, Young Fellows Club, Weyburn Figure Skating Club and Weyburn Cemetery Board. His interests over the years included: hunting, training his hunting dogs, curling, the family cottage at White Bear Lake and endless renovation projects. His love of family was all important and he celebrated in the accomplishments of each member. Herb died of a broken heart nine days after the death of Gwen, his wife of 58 years. A memorial service was held on Friday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment to follow at a later date. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Arthritis Society. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.


George Peter Morton

On Thursday, May 4, 2000, George Peter Morton, late of Weyburn, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 85 years. George was born August 18, 1914 at Innes, SK, where he lived with his parents on the farm for a number of years before moving to Griffin. He was employed by the R.M. of Griffin as Secretary-Treasurer for 43 years. In 1938 he married Catherine (Kay) Broughton of Creelman. In 1986 George and Kay moved to Weyburn. George also served occasionally as secretary for the Ideal Telephone Co. and the Griffin School Board. He enjoyed fishing, curling, golfing and music, as well as his municipal work. George spent a lot of holidays in the summer at the cottage at White Bear Lake, joined by his family and friends. George was a member of the Grace United Church. George was predeceased by his father, Charles, and mother, Anna Elizabeth; four brothers: Paul, Glen, Bob and David; three sisters: Vesta, Mariam and Betty. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Kay); son, Charles (Ada) Morton of Nepean, ON; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren Stewart (Brenda), Peter, Barry, Rhonda, Doug, Shalana, Mischa and Trace. A graveside service was held Monday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. from Griffin Cemetery with Bill Corkum officiating minister. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. For those wishing to express their sympathy may donate to the Grace United Church Building Fund, the Regina Ostomy Chapter, UOA of Canada Inc., #603-2720 College Ave., Regina, SK, S4T 1T5 or to a charity of choice. A reception was held following the burial at the Weyburn Wheatland Centre. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
