OBITUARIES

Gordon Alexander Dalgliesh

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gordon Alexander Dalgliesh, of Weyburn, an-nounces the passing of their loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gordon passed away Monday, June 26, 2000 at the age of 90. Predeceased by his mother and father, Jennie and Frank Dalgliesh, his sisters Stella Lawford and Eva Bethell, brother Floyd Dalgliesh, sister-in-law Evelyn Minard, brothers-in-law Gardner Lawford, Bill Bethell, Jim Cox and Joe Minard, Gordon leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Florence; his children Bonnie (Glenn) Halbwachs and Barry (Myrna) Dalgliesh of Regina, and Merle (Jim) St. Onge of Weyburn; his six grandchildren Susan Lehner of Regina and her sons Colby and Zach, Marla St. Onge of Weyburn and her daughter Keely, Michael Halbwachs of Toronto, Jason St. Onge of Weyburn and his son Kyran, Kari Dalgliesh of Regina and her fiance Jeff Dean, and Danielle (Jason) Cook of Weyburn and their children Brady and Shayda. He also leaves to mourn his sisters-in-law Margaret Cox and Dorothy Dalgliesh, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon Alexander Dalgliesh was born February 12, 1910 in Ralph, SK. He was the first-born son of Jennie and Frank who farmed in the area around Ralph; at that time he had two older sisters, Eva and Stella, and the family was completed when Floyd was born three years later. In those days there was a small school house with one teacher who taught grades 1-8; Gordon attended along with his neighbours, the Cugnets and Millers. By the time he finished Grade 8, he quit school to work on the family farm. He later went on to work at the Soo Hotel in Weyburn as a bartender, an experience which led to his making many contacts which would later help in the forming of his own business. In 1939-40, Gordon met and married Florence Minard. In 1941 their first child, Bonnie, was born and in 1942 he joined the Army Service Corps and began basic training for his entry into World War II. He left his family behind when he went overseas in 1942 to fight in the war, seeing service in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. When the war ended in 1945 he took the opportunity to travel to many other European countries until his trip home in December 1945 and subsequent discharge in February of 1946. When Gordon arrived back in Canada in 1946, he set out to make a living for his growing family; a son Barry was born in December of that year and a daughter Merle 18 months later. He began work at the Saskatchewan Training School, which was housed at the Weyburn Airport, driving a truck. With a borrowed scraper from his father-in-law and with the purchase of a truck, Gordon started his own sand and gravel business. He worked long, hard hours and, as his business grew, so did the responsibilities - more equipment was purchased, extra help was needed and, when the day was done, many hours in the evening were spent doing paperwork. Gordon later joined the Giroux brothers in the formation of Dalgliesh and Giroux Brothers Redi-Mix. During this time, he was featured in the Weyburn Review as 'Businessman of the Week.' He sold both businesses in 1973-74 to retire. Gordon was an avid hockey fan. When former Weyburn Red Wing, Bill Lesuk, joined our extended family by marrying our cousin Mary Jane, he followed them to Philadelphia, Los Angeles and finally to Winnipeg where they settled. While with the Winnipeg Jets, Bill took Gordon along to Quebec City, Moscow and Tokyo. He also spent some time on the Weyburn Red Wing executive and held a season ticket for many years; even when he wasn't well this past winter, he would take his radio to bed with him and listen to the Red Wing broadcasts. Other trips Gordon enjoyed were one to visit his nephew, Ron Dalgliesh and his family, in Africa while they were stationed there, as well as spending a few winter months with Florence in the southern United States. In the summer he enjoyed spending time with his family at their cottage at White Bear Lake. Gordon was a 55 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion and held a life membership in both the Elks and Oddfellows Lodges. He was an active member of our community and will be missed on coffee row at the Weyburn Co-op. But, most of all, he will be sadly missed by all of his family as our circle has now been broken. Prayers will be heard Wednesday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul with Reverend Francis Hengen presiding. Interment to follow at Hillcrest cemetery, Weyburn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or to the St. Vincent de Paul church fund. Arrangements are entrusted to the Fletcher Funeral Chapels, Weyburn.

Rather than mourn the absence of the flame
Let us celebrate how brightly it burned.
Let's comfort one another with favorite memories
Of sharing times when we were all together.
Let's celebrate the spirit of one very special life
So in our hearts that flame will burn forever.
