Frederick William Hoffert

On Friday, July 14, 2000, Frederick William Hoffert, late of Weyburn, passed away at Souris Valley Extended Care Center at the age of 79 years. Predeceased by his mother and father, Ignatz and Annie Hoffert, six brothers and one sister. Frederick is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise of Weyburn; his children: David (Pam) and their daughter Lauren of Calgary; Duane of Weyburn; Mary-Anne (Daryl) Pearson and their children: Jetta and Jared of Saskatoon; Bernadette (Todd) Persson and their children: Miles, Megan and Mathew of Tribune; Sheila Hudson and her children: Chelsey, Alexie and Evan of Weyburn; brothers and sisters: Alphonse (Rose) of Weyburn, Henry of Weyburn, Anne Sauvie of Vernon, BC, Ignatz (Beverly) of Vancouver, BC, Faltine of Weyburn and Paul of Chilliwack, BC; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernard (Marie) Crumley of Estevan, Ed (Gloria) Crumley of Salmon Arm, BC, Emilia Lalonde of Estevan, Pat Crumley of Weyburn and Alice Crumley of Estevan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was born on the farm south of Bromhead, SK on March 17, 1921 into a large family. He enjoyed playing baseball, horseback riding and playing musical instruments. He joined the Armed Forces at the age of 21 and attended boot camp at Trenton, ON and was stationed in Jamaica. On June 30, 1952 he married Louise Crumley at Sacred Heart Church, Torquay. He started out living in Estevan with his new bride and was employed at the locker plant. After that he worked at Mann's Groceries. In 1958 he started his career with OK Economy which would bring many years working with the company. In 1964 the company took him and his family to Watrous for three years. Then in 1967 they moved to weyburn where he would complete his working years until retirement in 1986. Throughout his years with the OK Economy he made numerous friends with the people he worked with and the customers he served. After retirement many would still see him in the store doing his shopping and visiting. Fred was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Elks Club. He loved hockey and was a devoted Red Wings fan. He watched hockey on TV and of course the ball games always brought a smile to his face of which the Toronto Blue Jays were a favorite. The birth of each grandchild was very special to him and then as each one grew up they always brought a smile to his face. Prayers were said Monday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Father Hengen presiding. The funeral mass was held Tuesday, July 18 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Francis Hengen Celebrant. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Eugene Emberley, Tim Lalonde, Lawrence DeLaet, Don Mickalishen, Ed Mazur and Svein Bryeide. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.


Margaret Joyce Bartlett

On Friday, July 21, 2000, Margaret Joyce Bartlett, born March 10, 1928, passed away peacefully at home. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Clifford Napper and Helena Bixenman; her husband, George Kenneth Bartlett and a sister in infancy. Joyce is survived by her son and daughters: Star (Harv) Parker of Moose Jaw; Scott (Debbie) Bartlett of North Battleford; and Wanda Bartlett of Weyburn; six grandchildren: Rob (Lisa) Parker of Moose Jaw; Kris, Brett and Cody Parker of Moose Jaw; Dustin and Sean Bartlett of Saskatoon; and one great grandchild, Brady Parker. Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 25 at 1:00 p.m. from Hastings-Dionne Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment followed in Tyvan Cemetery, Tyvan. The pallbearers were Joyce's six grandsons. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends so wishing can make donations to the M.S. Society in her memory. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn.


Arthur Kinnard Bakke

On Monday, July 17, 2000, Arthur Kinnard Bakke, late of Weyburn and formerly of Yellow Grass, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 95 years. Predeceased by his parents Peter and Johanna Bakke, one brother Irvin and one sister Eunice Sinclair. Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jessie Bakke of Yellow Grass, and one daughter Colleen Altwasser of Yellow Grass; five grandchildren: David (Nancy Cameron) Altwasser, James (Peggy) Altwasser, both of Regina; Darcy Altwasser of Swift Current; Laura (Tim) Hengen of Elko, BC; and Lynn (Michael) Fix of Regina; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters: Irene Peters of Vancouver, BC and Bernice (Roy) Le May of Saskatoon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Artie was born in Ke Lamere, North Dakota, USA on February 19, 1905. He immigrated to Yellow Grass in 1910 with his family to Sec. 36-10-17. He took his schooling at Sunnydale School, but soon was only attending during the winter months in order to help at home. The land work was done with horses and he spent many hours behind six and eight horse outfits. In 1931 he married Jessie Bartlett, right in the heart of the depression. He found work harvesting in Manitoba and in 1938 he got a job building dams on the Wood River from McCord of Coderre. In 1939 his parents retired. He rented the family farm with Irvin. They had a mixed farm, extra income came from hunting coyotes. In 1962 a new home was built in Yellow Grass and he farmed from town until 1974 when the farm was sold. In his younger days he played baseball with the Sunnydale team and enjoyed curling in the annual bonspiel. He was a quiet man who loved farming, working with wood and watching sports on TV. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The last five years were spent in Weyburn Special Care Home. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 22, at 1:00 p.m. from Yellow Grass United Church with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment will be at a later date. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur's memory may be made to the Yellow Grass United Church. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn.


Isabelle (Belle) Covert

On Thursday, July 20, 2000, Isabelle (Belle) Covert, passed away at the Weyburn Special Care Home, at the age of 89 years. Predeceased by her husband, Leon Covert; her parents: James and Mary Ann Morgan; a brother, Philip Morgan; a sister, Carrie Morgan; and a sister-in-law, Frances Young. Belle is survived by her sisters: Phyllis Douglas of Weyburn; Laura Paxman of Weyburn; Alice Bristow of Victoria, BC; Ida Jasper of Kelowna, BC; Ethel Lawrence of Weyburn; and Frances (Bill) Wylie of Toronto; brother, Bill Morgan of Toronto; brothers-in-law: Keith Covert of Weyburn; Lloyd (Edith) Covert of Weyburn; Ennis Faulkes of Weyburn; and Geneviene Johnson of Saskatoon; and several nieces and nephews. Belle was born July 6, 1911 at Maxim, SK and attended school at the Little Butte School. She married Leon Covert in 1933. They lived in Colgate where Leon operated a barber shop and drug store. Both of them enjoyed singing in the choir and many dances and outings where Leon played the banjo. They moved to Weyburn in 1944, where Leon continued to operated a barber shop. Belle and Leon lived in their home on 10th Street until moving to Bison Manor. Leon passed away in 1985 and Belle continued to reside in Bison Manor until moving to the Weyburn Special Care Home in February of 1999. Belle was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and treasured her Legion pin for her 40 years of service. Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 25 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Marilyn Anderson Corkum officiating minister. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Pallbearers were: Ken, Brett, Scott, Greg and Kim Paxman; and Juanita Lequyere. For friends so wishing, donations may be made to the Weyburn Special Care Home in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
