Mildred Elaine Hofmeister

On Thursday, July 27, 2000, Mildred Elaine Hofmeister (nee Carlberg) of Fillmore, succumbed to cancer at Fillmore Union Health Centre at the age of 75. Elaine was the oldest daughter of Albin and Lillian (nee Driver) Carlberg and was born on the family farm east of Osage on March 9, 1925. She attended elementary school in Fillmore and graduated from high school in Palmerston, ON. It was here in Ontario that Elaine began dating Vernon Hofmeister. When the Carlberg family moved back to their home at Osage Elaine moved to Prince Albert to work for the telephone company while Vernon served overseas during the war years. On June 15, 1946 Elaine married Vernon at a service held at her parents' farm. After residing in Weyburn for two years, Elaine and Vernon returned to the life they loved at the Hofmeister family farm six miles north of Griffin. Here they remained for 50 wonderful years until Vernon's death in November 1998. Elaine was an extremely active member in the community she loved and was involved in several community groups. In May 2000 she received her 50 year pin from the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a Rebekah since 1954 and served on the executive at both the local and district levels. Elaine particularly loved the drills the Lodge performed at Provincial Assemblies. She was a member of the United Church Women and the church board. She was also a Sunday School teacher, 4-H instructor and typing teacher. But there is no doubt that she was happiest in her career as a dance instructor. In 1992 Elaine and Vernon were commissioned by Heritage Saskatchewan to co-produce an instructional video on old time dances. "A Celebration of Dance" was presented to various schools, libraries and nursing homes throughout the province, and was sold in both Canada and the United States. The video document recorded in detail the steps for several old time dances, and has been filed at the Provincial Archives in order that this small but precious portion of our pioneer heritage may be preserved for future generations. Elaine leaves behind her six children: Larry (Iris) of Regina; Lanny (Gayle) of Thompson, MB; Lorraine (Barry) Munro of Regina; Leila of Regina; Les (Angie) of Calgary, AB; Lindsey (Susan) of Winnipeg, MB; 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Elaine is also survived by her brothers Albin (Mae) Carlberg and Howard (Shirley) Carlberg and her sister Shirley Mae Luchenski, all of Fillmore; and numerous nephews and nieces. The memorial service was held on Monday, July 31 at the Grace United Church in Fillmore and was conducted by Rev. Heather Lea. The eulogy was given by family friend Jean Fahlman. The pallbearers were Elaine's nephews: Rick Carlberg, Barry Carlberg, Murray Moore, Ken Hofmeister, Hal Hofmeister and grandson Sean Hofmeister. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Rebekahs. The family would like to thank the staff at the Fillmore Union Health Centre for the loving and professional care provided to Elaine in her time of need. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing may make donations in Elaine's memory to the Fillmore Health Centre Palliative Care, Fillmore, Saskatchewan S0G 1N0. God Needed an
Angel in Heaven
When Jesus lived upon the earth
so many years ago
He called the children close to Him
because he loved them so.
And with that tenderness of old,
that same sweet gentle way,
He holds our little loved one
close within His arms today.
And we'll find comfort in our faith
that in His Home Above
The God of little children gives
our little one His Love.
So think of our little darling
lighthearted and happy and free
Playing in God's Promised Land
where there is Joy Eternally.
