Pauline was born December 10, 1904 in Constopol, in the district of the Germans of eastern Europe called Volhynia, to Karl and Amelia Sonnenberg. Pauline was raised in a large blended family. Revolution and war drove them from their homes into Germany, where they were separated. Pauline emigrated to Canada with her younger brother Gus, coming to live with sister Louise Bohn in the early 1920s. In 1925 Pauline married Hans Degner and they made their first home on the Degner farm. Then they moved into Weyburn where they raised their family of three: Eleanor, Arnold and Cliff. Weyburn was a good place to grow up in with everyone in the family busy in community and church. Hans was the treasurer of Zion Lutheran Church for many years and Pauline was active in Ladies Aid well into her 80s. She worked in the homes of many families in Weyburn, as well as opening her own home for many years to boarders. After retirement, Pauline and Hans tried life in Regina for a while but soon returned to their many close friendships in Weyburn. After being widowed in 1969, Pauline seemed to always be getting on another Greyhound bus to visit her family in Marchfield, Cornwallis, Halifax, Bathurst, Hamilton and even flew overseas to see Cliff in England and Arnold in Scotland. There were many more good times on those visits, but her family also appreciated the visits to grandma in Weyburn. She was a fantastic cook. Saturday was baking day especially if relatives were coming. Deteriorating health with age led to the move into the Weyburn Special Care Home were Pauline was well regarded and appreciated by staff and residents alike. Even there she remained an avid bowler, bingo and card player and continued her nightly devotions. As she gradually weakened she became confined to bed and chair and passed away peacefully August 1. Funeral service was held Saturday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn.
