Iona was born January 6, 1933 in Oungre. She was raised on a farm four miles west of Tribune, the seventh of eight children born to Amos and Frances Walkeden. She attended school at Little Butte, Slager and finished high school in Tribune to become a study supervisor in Lomond School helping students in grades 1-8 to complete their correspondence courses. This was part of the Radville school district and she went on in 1955 to Normal School in Moose Jaw with the agreement that she would return to teach in Radville. Iona met Carl, her husband of 42 years, when they were both confirmed in the Radville United Church. After a brief courtship, they were married July 7, 1954. Their honeymoon included driving to Detroit to pick up the new trailer that would be their home as they traveled to various towns with Carl and Sig's construction business. Iona left teaching to cook meals for the men and to begin raising a family. In 1963 they moved onto the farm (Larsen Produce) which Carl purchased from his father. Like so many farm wives, Iona not only ran the household and raised children, but helped in many areas on the farm. Iona and Carl have always been known for their hospitality and Iona never seemed to mind preparing coffee, treats or meals the many times Carl would invite someone in, often announcing it as he walked through the door. Iona's own wonderful sense of humor enhanced Carl's well known wit and she shared many laughs, at one point assigning numbers to some of Carl's favorite jokes to shorten the delivery. Iona and Carl loved to travel and meet people. They have shared many long and close friendships and always enjoyed meeting new people through their winter travels to the south. After Carl's death in 1997, Iona continued to travel, the highlight being a trip to England, Scotland and Ireland with Enid, Evelyn, and Eileen. Iona was very involved in the Radville United Church through the UCW and singing with the choir. She served for many years as secretary for the Saskatchewan ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) Society. She enjoyed curling, bowling, golfing and camping and always maintained a great garden despite living on a vegetable farm. Iona valued family and friends and was forever in touch by writing and calling, keeping everyone informed as to family activities. Funeral service was held Friday, August 25 at 2:00 p.m. from Radville United Church with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment followed in Laurier Cemetery, Radville. The active pallbearers were her grandchildren: Dustin, Amber, Sienna, Christopher, Laurel, and Ian Larsen. In lieu of flowers for friends so wishing, donations may be made in Iona's memory to the Radville Marion Health Care Auxiliary (Palliative Care). Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn and Radville.
