OBITUARIES

Catherine Napier McMillan

Catherine (Cathy) Napier McMillan passed peacefully into eternal rest with her Lord December 17, 2004 at the age of 83. Predeceased by her parents, John and Catherine Buchanan and her husband, Robert in 2003, she is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Catherine (Barry) Shiells, Yorkton and grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrea (Clint Maduck) and Kirsten; and her son, John (Dorothy) McMillan, Balgonie and grandchildren, Ian, Cathleen and Angus. Catherine was born December 1, 1921 in Sunderland, Co. Durham, England to John and Catherine Buchanan. When she was six years old, the family - now with little brother, John, moved to Dovercourt, Essex. They bought a house at #17 Lime Avenue and it was known for the vast array of flowers and roses her father grew. They also had a fish pond in the back yard which had goldfish year round. Her dad was employed at the harbour as a food inspector, inspecting the ships as they docked from Europe. Catherine loved the seaside and became a great competitive speed swimmer and played water polo as a young girl. Following school she worked in the shipping office in Dovercourt and also with the Red Cross setting up first aid posts. In the summer of 1940 the family had to leave Dovercourt due to the threat of invasion. The navy took over the harbour and there was no work. They left their home and moved to St. Helens, Lancashire. Here Catherine (also known as Buckie) worked in the medical department, the air raid precaution office and also in the TB clinic X-ray department for the Health Department. Catherine came to Canada in 1948. She had been writing to Robert McMillan of Weyburn as a pen friend and they met when he served overseas. Arriving in Weyburn she stayed with her aunt Bella (Isabelle) Haswell (her mother's sister) and in August of 1948 she married Robert McMillan at Calvary Baptist Church. Together they had two children, and not breaking tradition, named them Catherine in 1953 and John in 1958. Catherine was an amazing seamstress and sewed all the clothes for her young family and her English smocking adorned many beautiful dresses. Her knitting was equally "perfect" and the speed of those needles made you wonder how she didn't drop a stitch from the intricate patterns she made. She was devoted to her family but also enjoyed having a career outside the home. She worked at both the South East Regional Library and Weyburn Public Library for many years. Her abilities as an organist took her through the doors of many Weyburn churches and nursing homes if they needed someone to play. She also played for many years for Ferguson's Funeral Home. In the early 70's she agreed to fill in "temporarily" at Knox Presbyterian Church playing the wonderful pipe organ. This became her "life" as organist and choir director for some 20 plus years. During the late 1990's Catherine's memory began to slip and it became apparent that her ability to remember present day activities was failing. In the fall of 1999 Catherine was diagnosed with breast cancer and the subsequent surgery followed by chemotherapy left her extremely frail. In October 2000 she fell and severely broke her left arm. In November 2000, unable to return home, she was hospitalized at Souris Valley Extended Care and gradually, with exceptional loving care from the staff on 1BS her health improved and her arm healed. Souris Valley became Catherine's permanent home and she was always very happy and cheerful. In her mind she was "working" and helping out just as she had done in the clinics during the war. At the age of 83 Catherine quietly, peacefully, slipped away and all who knew and loved her will miss her dearly. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 from Knox Presbyterian Church in Weyburn, with Reverend John Ferrier officiating. The organist, Tanis Thomas, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "The Lord's My Shepherd", "O That Will Be Glory", "He Leadeth Me" and "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah." The interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery with John McMillan, Ian McMillan, Barry Shiells and Clint Maduck serving as casket bearers. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Yorkton.

In 1955, they moved to Radville where Henry worked at the locker plant and Flo started working at the Radville Hospital. Laurette was born on January 11, 1957. Flo continued to live in her home that she and Henry built in 1958 up until January 1999. She continued to take her walks, knit and play cards with her friends at the Health Centre. One of Flo's many hobbies included gardening. She always loved to spend time in her back yard which was full of beautiful flowers that she cared for with her barrels of rain water. Flo always seemed to brighten your day when she'd meet you on the street and greet you with her friendly smile. She was always pleased to spend time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Whether she was playing catch with the boys or doing the polka in the living room with the girls she was always happy to have their company. Everyone who knew Flo will agree that she was a child at heart. She was never too old to dance it up or play tricks on those she loved. From going to school at the convent and playing tricks on the Sisters, to working at the Home and pulling pranks on the staff, Flo always knew how to have a good time and keep your spirits high. Barry was brought up in Crooked River. Being the youngest of 10 children, Barry was able to get away with a lot of mischief, putting the blame on his sister Marlene and brother David who were only 13 months older, and Isabelle. Marlene, David and Barry were together always because of the closeness in age. Instead of just David and Marlene being the twins, they were more like triplets. On April 6, 1998, Barry married Barb Trombley in Hawaii, after a five week holiday in Australia and New Zealand. Barry was employed at Dempsey Laird Trucking in Halbrite. Barry worked with Dempsey from the time he was 17 years old with the exception of three years that he worked for Cymcon (Steve and Kim Peterson). Barry enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He loved giving his wife Barb flowers and cards for "just because" and playing with his two children, Paige, five years, and Kordel, 21 months. Every spare moment was spent playing Barbies or reading stories. The last couple of years he even took up camping to make everyone else happy, and found that he actually enjoyed it. Barry will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all he knew and loved. A memorial service was held Wednesday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. from Knox Presbyterian Church, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Westphalia Cemetery, Midale. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers.
