Opportunity Road Race to raise funds

As of Thursday morning, there were 67 participants registered for the event.
The start and finish line will be Mel's on Third, with opening ceremonies start at 7:30 a.m. Runners will be going down Railway Avenue from Third Street, onto the Tatagwa Trail and down Saskatchewan Drive through the Souris Valley. They also go down Fifth Avenue and King Street. Residents are encouraged to cheer on the runners, but are reminded to not block the road.

The Opportunity Road Race includes five kilometre, 10 km and 15 km races, and a special Mini Mile for children ages 12 and under.

The Kids Mini Mile will start at 7:50 a.m., and the five km, 10 km and 15 km will start at 8 a.m.

For the five km, participants must be at least 10 years of age; for the 10 km, participants must be at least 12 years of age; and for the 15 km, participants must be at least 14 years of age. All runners under 18 years must have a waiver form signed by their parents or guardians.

Maps for all the courses are available at www.weyburnroadrace.com, as are registration forms for the annual fundraiser.

The event includes a post-race breakfast for registered participants at the finish line. Extra tickets can be purchased for friends and family.

For reasons of safety, no pets, rollerblades or skateboards are allowed on the course. Registered guide dogs are allowed, to assist with the visibly impaired.
Only registered participants wearing an official race bib will be allowed on the course. All participants who cross the finish line will receive a finishers medal. Those runners who have the best time will be posted on the Opportunity Road Race website.

The race course will officially close after two and a half hours, after this time runners and walkers will become informed pedestrians and must abide by regular pedestrian regulations.

The block of Mel's On Third will be blocked off the morning of the race. Parking is available at the lot on Second Street behind Mel's On Third.

Late fee registration is still open until Friday, Aug. 15, and that costs $75. The late fee for the Kids Mini Mile is $30.

In 2013, the fundraiser raised $4,768 for the hospital foundation and $941 for the Comp Student Representative Council (SRC). In 2012, $5,738.40 went to the hospital foundation and $1,024 to the Comp SRC.
