Red Wings preparing for fall camp

The Weyburn Red Wings are busy preparing for this season's upcoming fall camp, which will take place from Saturday, Aug. 30 to Monday, Sept. 1.

Wings head coach and general manager, Bryce Thoma, has decided to run fall camp a little differently this year. Instead of the usual format, which consisted of five games followed by cuts to the roster, this year's fall camp will include three games and two practices which will allow for more thorough evaluations of the individual players and their abilities.

"This year we are expecting between 40 to 44 players, all of which will be attending through invitation only. The smaller camp size will make things more competitive and will help us to build the best roster that we can. Our main goal this year is to have a strong team and take it to the top," said Thoma.

Thoma is uncertain about which players from last year's team will be returning to this year's fall camp.

"Ideally, I'd like to see as many eligible players from last year's team make it to this year's camp, but the unfortunate reality is that a lot of them won't. Some of them want to pursue other things, like university, and some others simply no longer want to play. Whatever their reasons, I respect their choices. This year we can't wait to fill the roster with players that want to play, that have a real passion for the sport and bring that fire to every game," said Thoma.

On Monday, Sept. 1, the Red-and-White game will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place, with cuts being made after the game, prior to the opening of the pre-season.

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, the Red Wings take on the Can-Elson Drilling Estevan Bruins at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m..

From Sept. 5 to 7, the Red Wings will be in Estevan for a round-robin tournnament.

On Friday, Sept. 5, the Wings take on the Virden Oil Capitals at 4 p.m. in Estevan. The Wings will face off against the Estevan Bruins on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Estevan. On Sept. 7 at 2:30 p.m., the Wings take on the Minot Minotauros in Estevan.

On Friday, Sept. 12, the Wings will face the Notre Dame hounds at Crescent Point Place.

The annual Weyburn Red Wings Alumni Golf Tournament will be held at the Weyburn Golf Course on Sept. 13.

On Sunday, Sept. 14, the Wings will travel to Wilcox to face the Notre Dame Hounds, bringing an end to the pre-season.
