Fans of Trenna Keating's work on "Defiance", as the character Doc Yewll, were able to learn more about the enigmatic Indogene during episode 17, which aired on Thursday night.

Keating, a former Weyburn local, has appeared in 15 episodes as a recurring character. "Defiance" is at the halfway point of its second season, and is aired on Showcase in Canada and Syfy in the United States.

There is only one more recurring character who has appeared in more episodes, as Dewshane Williams has appeared as Tommy LaSalle in 17 episodes. Out of the main cast, Grant Bowler as Joshua Nolan, Julie Benz as Amanda Rosewater and Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa Nyira all have appeared in 17 episodes. Both Tony Curran as Datak Tarr and Jaime Murray as Stahma Tarr have both appeared in 15 episodes as main cast.

During the seventh annual Constellation awards, presented on July 5, "Defiance" was the voted second in the Best Science Fiction Television Series of 2013 category, and in Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Sci-Fi Film or Television in 2013. Keating herself was nominated for Best Female Performance in a 2013 Science Fiction Television Episode, and received eight per cent of the vote. The winner in that category was Tatiana Maslany from "Orphan Black".

While not revealing too much about the plot of the episode, it was the first time that two Indogene characters spoke to each other in their native tongue. Their language was crafted to be pragmatic and economical.

Trenna spoke about some of her experiences from filming the second season, including having her character imprisoned.

"I loved Camp Reverie! But it was August and unbearably hot. Temperature is always a concern for me and I was essentially wearing a sweat suit with not a single inch of my body exposed. I was even locked into prosthetic hands in those episodes so claustrophobia was fully kicking in, but in a way, I guess its added to the feeling of being in hell!"

"The scene with Datak and Doc in a crowded cell is one of my favorites. He gives Doc some powder to help her with the pain of losing her finger. Doc could refuse the olive branch but doesn't. Datak does most of the talking, but Doc does listen," said Keating. "It's a very quiet, still scene and I felt it was a pivotal one for Doc. There is a small crack in her hard exterior. She doesn't want to be alone. She says 'You're a pal' (to Datak) and though she laces everything with sarcasm she means it."

A few new characters were introduced for season two, and they are definitely making things interesting. Keating said, "It feels like they have been there all along. They have just jumped in and stole our hearts."

More will be revealed on the show as it progresses further into the second season.
