Tommy Douglas - 'Greatest Canadian'

Thomas Clement Douglas (1904-1986) arrived in Weyburn 1930 as the minister for Calvary Baptist Church at the beginning of the Great Depression. He set up a job and food distribution centre at the church, and moved into political involvement. He ran and lost under the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1934, but was successful in the 1935 federal election. He served two terms in Ottawa, and re-entered provincial politics in 1944 by leading the CCF to power. He served as Saskatchewan's premier until 1961, followed by 10 years as leader of the NDP. This website is a tribute to his life and accomplishments. One of Weyburn's favorite sons, Douglas has left a legacy that has made us proud to be Canadian. Below are collected a number of links on Tommy Douglas, and his legacy.
