Phil Curtis will be returning as head coach for the Weyburn Senior Beavers for his fifth consecutive year. “I am really excited for the summer. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the town and there is something really good happening here.”
His brother Corey Curtis will join Phil again on the bench for the third consecutive year. “Working with my brother has been great. He just does all those little things the right way.”
There are a few key veterans who will be returning to the field to play for the Senior Beavers again this year. Both Eric Evans and Ryan Johnson are prairie-born players who will be back for another year. Evans grew up playing baseball in Weyburn, while Johnson is from Winnipeg.
Other players who are returning include Brodie Stairs, Josh Trybuch, Ty Scott and Cam Williams. There will be a lot of new faces on the field who haven’t played for the Beavers before. “We just have to mold them and get them to buy into the program and gel into the team,” said Curtis. “When players are having fun playing together, they gel together easier.”
The players will start to arrive in Weyburn before the start of June. The Beavers start their season with a few away games, playing in Melville, Moose Jaw and Yorkton on the first three nights, Friday to Sunday, June 1 to 3. The Beavers will then have another three-game road trip to Regina, Melville and Yorkton on Monday to Wednesday, June 5 to 7.
The first home games of the season will be held Friday, June 9, against Moose Jaw and then on Saturday, June 10, against Swift Current.
In addition to competing in the Western Major Baseball League, many of the players on the team help out with Weyburn Minor Baseball while they are in the community. “It is important to have that working relationship with our young athletes. It builds a foundation just to have the players working with the youth and sharing their baseball experience.”
