Weyburn’s Brett Jones is making quite the name for himself in the NFL, after earning a roster spot on the offensive line for the New York Giants. Jones had found a niche as a versatile and valuable reserve lineman who now steps into the center of the line for the Giants.

“It took a long process to get to this point, but it is very exciting to be playing with the Giants,” said Jones. “Every game is a challenge. As a center, you have to be the guy in charge. There are times when you can’t be thinking about the play, instead you just have to be fast and physical to get the job done.”

“It has been an easy transition to playing in the NFL,” said Jones. “The guys who are on the offensive line beside me are great to play with. Everyone in the locker room has a lot of respect with each other.”

Jones noted that it could be difficult for the team when they are dealing with a losing streak, but he also feels that the team is still staying focused. “We are trying to find our identity. We are staying supportive of each other, keeping the temp high, and especially with the offensive line, we are getting better.”

“The most important thing is that we stay focused during our practices, and during our games,” said Jones.

Jones has showed significant improvement, and had earned a roster spot as the team’s backup center in the preseason, before appearing in 14 games and significant playing time at center and left guard in two other games.

Jones played high school football at the Weyburn Comp, and then moved on to the University of Regina Rams, and then the Calgary Stampeders. In his time with the Stamps, Jones started in 38 regular-season games and earned the 2013 Most Outstanding Rookie Award and the 2014 Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award along with being a member of the 2014 Grey Cup winning team. This is a big season for Jones. He is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in March.

The New York Giants are fourth place in the NFC East division of the NFL, with only one win and eight losses so far this season. They are ranked 15th seed in the NFC, still in the hunt for a playoff spot.
