Rumina Edgerton, goalie for Team Saskatchewan Waterpolo and member of the Weyburn Hurricanes Waterpolo Club, will be traveling to Bogliasco, Italy, from Feb. 12 to 22 for a 10-day training camp with the most established waterpolo club in Italy, Rari Nantes Bogliasco, founded in 1951. RN Bogliasco is hosting the Saskatchewan U19 men’s and women’s players and the U.S. men’s and women’s U19 team.

The European training camps have been a huge success in the development of Team Sask players over the last several years, as they get to train and compete against some of the best players in the sport on the world waterpolo scene.

Head coach Cyril Dorgigne from the parent association, the Saskatchewan Waterpolo Association, and with assistance from Waterpolo Canada, has been instrumental in establishing, maintaining and fostering connections to ever increasing talented clubs world-wide. Last year’s camp was in Nice, France with 26 players and five chaperones attending.

Boglisaso is a suburb community of the metropolitan city of Genoa on the Ligurian sea coast. Although the population is small at 4,500, the history and accomplishments of waterpolo teams in this club and its 1A ranking in European Waterpolo make it a major contender in the sport.

Rumina Edgerton, 15, has been a member of Team Sask as one of two goalies for the past five years and currently competes on the U16, U19 National Championship League and the Open Major League squad. She has proven herself in tough competitions, including medalling silver at the 2016 Western 2016 NCL championships in Surrey, B.C., and silver at the National Championships in Montreal. In 2017 the team took gold at Westerns and fourth place at Nationals, both hosted in Calgary.

Edgerton said that the sport of waterpolo has opened up many opportunities and this is the second overseas training camp she will be on. With sights set on joining the National Waterpolo Team in the future, Rumina said that the only way to accomplish her goals is though hard work, discipline and effective training in the sport.
