Weyburn Eagles leads Estevan in McLeod Series

The Comp Eagles basketball teams will be heading to Estevan this week with a five-point lead in the historic McLeod Series, after Weyburn hosted the first set of games on Wednesday evening.

The Comp Eagles basketball teams will be heading to Estevan this week with a five-point lead in the historic McLeod Series, after Weyburn hosted the first set of games on Wednesday evening.
The boys played first, and the Eagles were edged out 79-74 by the Elecs. The top scorer for the Eagles was Paul Dionne with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
The Comp senior girls won over the Elecs 61-51, coming back after initially being down 10-0 before they got on the board in the first quarter.
Hailey Neiszner was the girls top scorer with 25 points. The senior girls and boys teams will be in Estevan for the second half of the McLeod Series tonight, Feb. 15, and the boys are off to a tournament in Swift Current this weekend.
The senior boys were at Estevan’s Invitational Tournament over the weekend, which they won by defeating Moose Jaw Vanier 74-58 in the championship game.
The top scorer was Earl Pineda with 31 points, and the top rebounder was Rylie Mainil with 10.
In the first game against Oxbow, the Comp Eagles won 81-51, with Tristan Sharpe the top scorer with 21 points, and the top rebounder was Thomas Goranson with 12.
In the semi-final versus Yorkton Sacred Heart, the Eagles on 70-59. The top scorer was Earl Pineda with 18 points, and the top rebounder was Rylie Mainil with 11.
Meanwhile, the Weyburn Comp junior girls basketball team finished third in the first annual Rock classic held in Regina on Feb. 10 and 11.
In their first game, the Eagles junior girls defeated Moose Jaw Vanier 50-46 and were led by Emily Haupstein with 20 points.
Then the junior girls lost to the host Regina Christian 55-37, who is undefeated in their league play and were the eventual tournament winners. Meagan Dutchak was the leading scorer with 13 points.
In the third place game the Eagles junior girls defeated the co-hosts from Harvest City 39-30. Dutchak lead the scoring with 14 points and there was strong defense from Piper Abel and Caroline Manning and 20 rebounds from Nikki Shanaida.
The girls travel to Radville for an exhibition game on Thursday, Feb. 16 and Brandon for a tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18.
