Douglas memorial dedicated in Scotland

A plaque and a memorial bench, dedicated to Thomas Clement Douglas, is unveiled at a special ceremony held near Douglas' birthplace at Falkirk, Scotland, in October. From left to right are Senator Dan Hayes, Abbi Holden, Corrie Stewart and Jim Johnston, Provost or municipal head of Falkirk. The plaque was donated by the Camelon Local History Group, and the bench, bearing the national motifs of the saltire and maple leaf of Scotland and Canada, was made by a local young offenders institution. The two girls attend Carmuirs Primary School in Camelon, the same school Douglas attended until his family emigrated to Canada.

Hometown ceremony held to honour T.C. Douglas

Officials gather at the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland to hold a ceremonial tribute to native son Thomas Clement Douglas, recently named as The Greatest Canadian in a CBC contest. From left are master of ceremonies Kenneth Shirra, Provost Jim Johnston of Falkirk, and Senator Dan Hayes. The wheel, shown in the background, is a feat of engineering that connects two canals spanning the breadth of the central belt of Scotland. The officials unveiled a plaque and bench placed in his name at this site, and officials are in discussion to also name a room in his honour at a facility in Camelon, the village of his birth.

Flag presented to Douglas' hometown

A Canadian flag is presented to the municipal head, or Provost, of Falkirk, the place where T.C. Douglas was born in Scotland, as part of a ceremony paying tribute to Douglas held there in October. Two schoolgirls, Abbi Holden and Corrie Stewart, help present the flag to the Provost, Jim Johnston (wearing his chain of office), along with Kathleen Hayes and William Abercrombie, chair of the Camelon Local History Group. The girls attend Carmuirs Primary School in Camelon, the village where Douglas was born. Also as part of the ceremony, a plaque and bench in tribute to Douglas were unveiled at the Falkirk Wheel, a device at the conjunction of two large canals in Scotland.
