EAST CENTRAL — The Regional Authority of Carlton Trail is asking for the public’s help as it takes additional action to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Landfills and transfer stations will remain open. If you go to a REACT landfill or transfer station, the authority askes people to practice physical distancing and carefully follow the directions given by the gate attendant.

People are being asked to be careful about what goes into the garbage and what goes into the recycling bin to protect REACT employees – especially if somebody is sick.

“Do not put soiled tissues or paper towels used for cleaning or any other contaminated material into the recycle bins,” the waste authority said. “Put them into your household waste.”

That would include items that are usually recyclable. For example, if somebody is sick and drinks from an item like a bottle or can, throw it into the garbage.

The authority is asking people to bag all household waste.

“Tie the bag tightly before putting it into your wheeled cart or before placing it on the curb for tag-a-bag pickup. This includes taking household waste to the landfill or transfer stations.”

Do not overfill the recycling bins at recycle centres or leave any type of recycling outside of the bins, as the product will become litter.

“It would be greatly appreciated if people would take their recycling home if the bins are full and bring it back once REACT has emptied the bins.”

If you are using an automated curbside recycling cart, please make sure it contains only recyclables and no garbage, the authority said. Do not place waste or recycling on top or beside the cart. Keep the lid fully closed on your recycling or waste cart or it will not be picked up. Have your cart or tag-a-bag garbage set out the street by 7 a.m. on your designated pickup day to ensure pickup.

The waste authority’s office is closed to the public until further notice. Staff are keeping regular hours. Those that need assistance will can call them at 306-682-1955 or email react@sasktel.net

REACT said that while it is trying very hard to continue to provide current services with limited staff, as circumstances evolve it may be necessary to adjust available services without notice.

“We are all in this together. REACT will continue to do our part, but we need your help to make it happen,” they said. “We count on you to help keep our staff healthy, as much as you count on us to remove your garbage and recycling.”
