Two weeks left to vote in Weyburn's James Weir People's Choice exhibition

There is just over a week left for local residents to view and vote on their favourite works in the James Weir People’s Choice art exhibition, on now at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library.

There is just over a week left for local residents to view and vote on their favourite works in the James Weir People’s Choice art exhibition, on now at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library.

Voting will end on Thursday, March 18 at 5 p.m., and the winners of the 37th annual art competition will be announced by livestream on Facebook on Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m.

Voters can see the exhibit in person, or they go online and vote virtually for their favourite art works.

Once the People’s Choice exhibition has wrapped up, the Allie Griffin Art Gallery will no longer be used for art exhibits. There are preparations to replace this gallery with the new gallery in the Credit Union Spark Centre, which will house the arts and recreation programs for the City of Weyburn.

An exhibit entitled “Living Skies”, featuring works by Kelly Meng Stephenson, is on display at the Weyburn Credit Union gallery from now until April 29. Stephenson was the top winner of last year’s People’s Choice exhibition. The next featured artist at the gallery will be Kendra Garbe.

At the City Hall Gallery, located on the second floor of City Hall, is the virtual exhibition, “Isolation”, featuring art works from the City of Weyburn’s Permanent Art Collection.

This gallery is only open by appointment, by calling 306-848-3219.

Applications are now open for the Millie Coghill Fine Arts Award. This is a scholarship open to all Weyburn and area students of any age who is continuing their education in the arts.

Application forms are available on the City of Weyburn’s website, or by emailing to weyburnartscouncil@weyburn.ca. Applications for this award will close on Friday, April 30.

Meanwhile, a number of art programs are available through the month of March from the City of Weyburn’s recreation department.

A beginner knitting class will be available on Wednesdays, from March 10 to 31, with instructor Bonnie Lillejord. A class to make a felted garden wall hanging will be held on Saturday, March 13 on Saturday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Instructor is Rhonda Lamb.

A topiary class is set for Tuesday, March 16 with instructor Olha Matiusheva, and a clay coil class will be held on Saturday, March 20 from 1-5 p.m. with instructor Darlene Martin.

An advanced watercolour painting class will be held on Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The instructor is Val Moker. Also on March 27 is a clay deck art class, from noon to 4 p.m. with instructor Darlene Martin.

A class entitled Instinctive Mixed Media Creations will be taught by Regan Lanning on Tuesday, March 30 from 7-9 p.m.
