A Weyburn resident went down to Estevan last week and took top spot at the Estevan Sings competition.

Karissa Hoffart, originally from Minton but working as a nurse in Weyburn, was the winner of Estevan Sings on June 19. The contest was held as featured entertainment during the Estevan Fair.

Hoffart was one of 10 singers who performed that night. After each sang once, the judges then trimmed the field down to five finalists. The quintet of singers performed again, and then the audience decided the winner, thanks to a vote via text messages.

Spectators ultimately picked Hoffart as the winner.

Hoffart won two tickets to an upcoming Backstreet Boys concert, and the opportunity to perform during the Rafferty Rumble next month in Estevan. And after the show, she spoke with Jeff Michel, who was one of the judges and the owner of a recording studio in the Estevan area.

“He wants to provide me with studio time,” said Hoffart. “The people in general are giving me that spark to continue on with my passion. I think that’s the main thing I get from this is that I’m never going to give up on my dream of being a singer and a songwriter.”
