There are new exhibits on display for the months of September and October, and the Weyburn Arts Council is planning for Culture Days events at the end of the month.
Weyburn artist Heather van der Breggen has her exhibit, “Pour It Out”, on display at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library. The opening reception for this exhibit will be held on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
An exhibition entitled, “ARTicles”, a wearable art exhibit, is on display in the Signal Hill Art Gallery on the second floor of the Signal Hill Arts Centre.
This features pieces by Jaynie Himsl, Ashley Fisher, Carol Reeve, Marna McManus, Brenda King, Shelley Van De Sype, Regan Lanning, Krista Klemmer, Lorena Squires and Nicole Griffin.
There will be a reception and fashion show of the pieces on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., as part of the Culture Days celebration.
An exhibit, “Watercolour Wanderings”, featuring art by Sheryl Cote, is on display in the Weyburn Credit Union gallery for September and October.
Culture Days will be held on the weekend of Sept. 28-30 with a number of events planned. The opening ceremonies will kick things off at 11 a.m. at the Soo Line Historical Museum, with entertainment and ethnic food on Friday, Sept. 28.
Ethnic food will be provided by the Southeast Newcomer Services, Weyburn FilCan community and the East Indian community, and a variety of entertainers will perform throughout the afternoon.
There will also be tours and free admission to the Soo Line Museum on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
The Wearable Art exhibition and fashion show will go from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Signal Hill Art Gallery. Those attending are requested to wear black to the fashion show.
The Weyburn Arts Council is organizing a T-shirt Factory for all ages at the museum on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. This activity will consist of five alteration stations where participants can choose from ready-made screens to add a new image to a shirt.
There will be special programs for families on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, including sessions on making dream catchers, bead bracelets and henna tattoos.
A cultural fair will also be held at the museum from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, hosted by the Weyburn Public Library in conjunction with the International Women of Weyburn. There will be a station where you can build your own puppet, the wood carvers will put on a carving demonstration, and there will be a showcase of ethnic food and displays from various cultures in the community.
A collaborative mural workshop will be put on by Regan Lanning of the Weyburn Arts Council from 2 to 4 p.m. at the museum. There is no cost to take part, but those interested need to preregister at 306-848-3278. The mural workshop is being offered as part of the Culture Days initiative using a photo by Elisa Fawcett. The finished mural will be displayed at the Signal Hill Arts Centre.
The Open Air Market will also be held on Saturday, from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. at the corner of Souris Avenue and Second Street.
Later in the fall, the Four Festive Floors event will be replaced by One Festive Floor, as it will move to the Cugnet Centre on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registration forms for artists are now available by emailing to weyburnartscouncil@weyburn.ca.
