The Weyburn Lawn (Short Mat) Bowling Club have continued to provide their activity at the City Centre Mall, in the former location of the Weyburn Gymnastics Club, with most of the four mats filled each afternoon. “Our regular bowling days will be every Tuesday and Thursday going forward,” said Vic Plante, organizer for the Short Mat Bowling Club, who indicated bowling times will be from 1 to 4 p.m. each afternoon. “This will continue depending on the weather, probably to around the middle of April. We may, at some time, try an evening slot depending on demand,” said Plante. On each bowling day, the bowlers will be randomly set up on teams, with each mat able to accommodate eight people, or a total of 24 at a time with all three mats set up. The game uses a tapered ball, which is about the size and weight of a five-pin bowling ball. It’s tapered so that it curves in the direction of the taper, and the thrower has to use the weight and strength of the throw to get it down to the other end close to the white ball, called the jack. The scoring is similar to curling, in that the balls closest to the jack are counted for points. Each game goes for 10 to 12 ends, and takes between an hour and a half to two hours, depending on how the game goes and how experienced the players are, said Plante. For footwear, it is recommended the players wear comfortable clean shoes, such as runners, non-cleated golf shoes or bowling shoes. Sets of bowls will be available to rent, and the rental fee for a game includes the fee to play and rental of a set of bowls, said Plante. Memberships are available, and rental fees for a game will $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Like with bowling balls, the bowls for this game can be in various sizes, and a bowler will need to try them to see which ones are best suited for their hands and abilities.
