The weekend was busy for the Weyburn Police Service, with most of the week’s calls for service coming on Friday through Sunday. During the week of May 10-16, the Weyburn Police Service received 79 calls for service, resulting in nine traffic related charges, three criminal code related charges, and two charges under the city bylaws.

An adult female faces charges of assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a court order after threatening another individual with a knife. The adult was arrested and released with an upcoming court date.

A couple acts of mischief and theft have police requesting the public’s assistance with any information that may assist in the investigation. Police received a report of mischief to the outdoor walking art gallery set up by the Weyburn Arts Council located off of First Avenue North. Numerous pieces of community art were destroyed and some stolen between May 14 and 15. Mischief also occurred to the Riverwood Development shop located off of Saskatchewan Drive sometime during the week.

Sunday was active as officers attended a local business in response to a reported individual who refused to comply with the current health order. Officers spoke to both the individual and business manager but the matter was not resolved and further investigation will be conducted. Also sometime late Sunday night, two vehicles were stolen from within the city. Police have identified two suspects, one of whom now faces charges after one of the vehicles was recovered in his possession.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and found the adult male driver to be Canada-wide prohibited from driving. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was arrested and charged accordingly.

Police responded to a call regarding the wellbeing of an individual displaying aggression and other concerning behaviour. Officers located the individual who expressed that they were okay but feeling upset due to a dispute with family. The situation was mediated without further incident and the individual left with their family.

If you noticed new faces with the Weyburn Police Service recently, it could be one of three new officers who have returned home from their training at the Saskatchewan Police College. Due to the pandemic, on-site training at the Saskatchewan Police College was compressed by a few weeks meaning the recruits arrived home and reported to their respective agencies earlier than anticipated.

The Weyburn Police Service welcomed the three new officers, Const. Lisa Robertson, Const. Levi Elford, and Const. Preston Roy, home on May 3rd, where they have been continuing their training under the supervision of field training officers.

Early in the week, officers responded to the report of a suspected impaired driver that nearly caused a collision. The driver was located and, although found not to be impaired, was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for driving without due care and attention.

Two other drivers are facing charges under the Traffic Safety Act for driving while suspended after being noticed and stopped by officers on patrol. One of the drivers also had their vehicle impounded.

Officers attended to assist the Weyburn Fire Department with a semi-trailer unit that was hooked on an overhead line within the city. The line was lifted without damage and the driver was able to carry on.
