Weyburn police investigate attempted CRA frauds

There were 70 calls for service during the week for the Weyburn Police Service, including fraud attempts and assaults.

Weyburn police received numerous calls about a CRA/Service Canada scam. Scammers tell people they will be arrested if they do not pay a certain amount of money to them. Revenue Canada/Service Canada does not operate this way, so it is best to just hang up. Police strongly advise the public not to give out any personal information to these individuals. City police were called to a local bar about an assault on Sunday. Two males were involved in an altercation, where one male was transported by EMS to the hospital due to his injuries. The other male was arrested and taken to the police station and was charged with assault causing bodily harm.

City police received a call from a local bank on Friday where a male was trying to deposit an altered cheque using mobile banking. Investigation is still ongoing at this time.

Weyburn police received a call from local business which was broken into on Saturday. The owner of the business believes the incident occurred overnight when the owner was gone. Police are still investigating the incident.

Police received a call about a missing 13-year-old male on Dec. 3. The youth was located a short time later with friends after a call came in to police. The youth was then returned to his grandparents.

Weyburn police attended to a disturbance at an apartment on Dec. 5 where the complainant wanted the individuals removed. Members attended to find several intoxicated people, at which time police told the unwanted guests to leave the residence. The individuals were taken to a local motel to stay.

City police received a 911 call of an assault in progress on Thursday. Members attended to the call and found a male and female, who had both received minor injuries from assaulting each other. Both parties were arrested and charged with assault and released for court at a later date. The female involved was also arrested on a warrant out Regina. She was served paper work for the warrant and will appear in Regina court at a later date.

Weyburn police received a call on Friday from a local apartment complex where Canada Post mailboxes had been tampered with. There are no suspects or witnesses at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, The Estevan RCMP Detachment is investigating three break-and-enters that occurred sometime in the early morning hours of Dec. 5th in the community of Torquay.

An unknown subject broke into the RM of Cambria office, the Village of Torquay office and the local rink.

This subject is suspected of also breaking into several other RM and village offices in the south half of the province.

Police advise area residents to keep their eyes open for any suspicious vehicles or people in the communities around the RM or village offices after business hours.
