Weyburn police investigate thefts, vehicle damages

The Weyburn Police Service responded to a total of 101 calls for service during the week of Feb. 23 to March 1, including mischief, break-and-enter and thefts.

The Weyburn Police Service responded to a total of 101 calls for service during the week of Feb. 23 to March 1, including mischief, break-and-enter and thefts. 

Two calls of vehicle windows being broken and items taken from inside were reported to police on Sunday. Both vehicles were parked in the central part of the city overnight and when the owners came to get them in the morning, noticed the damage. A purse and some clothing were taken from the vehicles, and the matter is under investigation.

A shed was entered on the west side of the city and a bike was taken from inside on Sunday. The door to the shed was also reported to be damaged.

Calls from different areas of the city came in about vehicles being hit with eggs. No damage to the vehicles was reported, however charges can be laid under the Highway Traffic Act or the Criminal Code for mischief if there is damage done to the vehicle. The eggings are being looked into by the police.

A dropped 911 call came into WPS on Sunday, as an individual on the other end of the line was in need of police assistance. WPS members were dispatched to an address on the south side of the city to find an assault had taken place. An individual was arrested, charged with assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of a break and enter tool. The individual was remanded and made a first court appearance on Tuesday.

A traffic stop was performed on the east side of the city on Feb. 23, and the driver was found to have a suspended license. The individual was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving while suspended.

Weyburn police members were called to a business on the west side of the city to a report of stolen items from a shed on Feb. 24. The lock to the shed was cut, and jerry cans and a weed whipper were stolen from inside. The investigation is ongoing.

An individual was stopped for speeding on Feb. 24 and found to show signs of impairment. The driver was charged for speeding and issued a three-day license suspension.

City police were called to a residence on the east side of the city to a report of damage to property on Feb. 25. The complainant told police that some loaned items had come back smashed and laying on the lawn. The matter is being solved through civil means.

An individual was apprehended by the city police under the Mental Health Act on Feb. 25. While in custody, the individual made numerous threats to harm WPS members and others, and the individual was transported for medical attention. During transport by the police, the individual became agitated and caused damage to one of the police vehicles. The individual is facing numerous charges and was remanded for court at a later date.

A report of a possible impaired driver coming into the city from the south on Highway 35 came in to police on Wednesday. WPS members were able to locate the vehicle and found the driver to be sober.

A child was brought into the Weyburn Police Service office that was located by an individual on the east side of the city on Wednesday. The child was lost and hungry, the parent of the child was located and they were reunited.

Police were called to a business on the west side of the city to a reported assault on Thursday. WPS members investigated and found that an employee was assaulted while trying to stop an individual that was stealing from the business. The individual was located by police, arrested and charged. The individual is due in court later this month.

Weyburn police were called to Crescent Point Place to assist with some unruly patrons on Friday night. Members arrived at the arena and found that a minor altercation had taken place in the stands, and both parties were escorted from the building.

Police were called to an establishment on Sunday due to the staff having concerns that an altercation may take place. Police arrived and located five individuals that were involved in a verbal and minor altercation. The parties were separated and left the establishment. Police were not called back for any further dealings.

Weyburn Police Service received a call of a possible intoxicated individual on Sunday, who just left a residence claiming to want to commit self-harm. WPS members patrolled the city and were contacted when a family member located the individual. Police returned to the residence and spoke to the individual, who was left in the care of his family.

An individual was located on the north side of the city after a call came in of an intoxicated person on Sunday. The individual was found to be on conditions not to consume alcohol, so the individual was arrested, charged and released for court at a later date.
