Weyburn police investigating break-in, theft from vehicle

The Weyburn Police Service received a report that a locked vehicle in a locked garage had both been broken into and some items taken from the vehicle.

As noted in an earlier press release, the police used to be able to confidently say that these types of crimes were very opportunistic and that if the owner simply locked their vehicle, the responsible person would move to the next easy target.

Unfortunately that is no longer the case where it now appears that thieves are willing to go to any length to gain personal property. In all likelihood these types of offences are tied to methamphetamine abuse where the person will do just about anything to get enough money for their next fix.

Weyburn police was dispatched to a report of a break-and-enter to a business on Saturday. The matter is still under investigation.

Weyburn police received a request to remove unwanted people from a residence on March 10. While dealing with this matter the police became aware that the person had an outstanding warrant for arrest, and the person was taken into custody without incident. As a result of that process the person was found to be in possession of contraband cigarettes and was charged accordingly. Contraband cigarettes are a significant source of revenue for organized crime in Canada. Penalties can be in the multi-thousands of dollars for violations.

The Weyburn police and Weyburn EMS received a call on March 10 regarding a report of individuals wanting to harm themselves in the area of the Tatagwa trails adjacent to River Park. Upon arrival it was learned that the incident had been blown up through social media. Everything was determined to be okay.

City police received a call regarding an unresponsive male in an apartment hallway on Wednesday. It is believed that the individual had suffered an overdose and was treated by Weyburn EMS and transported to the hospital.

Weyburn police received a report of a domestic-related assault on Wednesday where the victim suffered some injuries. The accused ended up turning himself in at the police station and was processed with criminal charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Police received a report of damage being done to vehicles by objects being thrown at them from an apartment building on Wednesday. The matter is still under investigation. 

Weyburn police received a report of an assault causing injury on Thursday. One person has been charged with assault and will be making a court appearance.

City police received a call on Friday relating to the wellbeing of a severely intoxicated person who left a residence and was not dressed for the weather. The person was found at a downtown bar and was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place, and was held in cells until sober.

Weyburn police received a request to assist a family in dealing with a distraught family member on Friday. The police assisted and were able to convince the person to go to the hospital to be assessed.

Police received a dispatch regarding a possible drug overdose on Friday. EMS also attended and transported the person to the hospital.

City police received a call regarding a possible impaired driver on Friday. Upon locating the person, it was determined that the driving action was due to a medical condition.

Police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Saturday because the vehicle registration was invalid. As a result of the stop it was determined that one occupant of the vehicle was not to be in contact with another occupant of the vehicle. The person in breach of the court conditions was arrested and charged.

While dealing with an unrelated matter on Monday, a vehicle stop was conducted. One of the occupants of the vehicle was known to have outstanding warrants and was arrested without incident. The person was released to appear in court on a later date.
