Two important dates on the calendar are coming up at the Weyburn Public Library, including the fall book sale, and Saskatchewan Library Week, which is being marked from Oct. 20-26.

The fall book sale began on Thursday, Oct. 17 and will run to Saturday, Oct. 19, on the library’s lower level.

This is a popular sale held twice a year, and features titles in soft and hard covers in all genres, from fiction to non-fiction, adult, teen and children’s categories, with books selling for a nominal price. The book tables fill the lower level, including the program room and the Allie Griffin auditorium, and proceeds go to help the library buy new materials.

The theme for Library Week is “Libraries: Building the Future”, and visitors to the library can enter the book spine poetry contest, which runs until Nov. 1.

As part of Library Week, the library will host author Gord Hunter on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m., and he will share readings from his book, “No-Badge Killick”, a tale from the navy during the Cold War.

Regional Kids First will bring the Main Street Mobile Van to the library on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Activities coming up for those with younger children include a session of “Baby and Me” on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 11 a.m., for babies up to one year old, and preschool storytime on Friday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m., for three to five year olds.

An annual favourite activity at the library is back, as pumpkin carving night will be held on Monday, Oct. 28 starting at 6 p.m. Families and anyone interested can come out and try their own design or a supplied one, with pumpkins and carving tools provided. Space is limited, so those interested are urged to preregister with the library.

For children aged eight to 12, a session of Squishy Circuits will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 3:45 p.m. Children can learn how to make and use electrical circuits, using insulated and conductive play dough.

Junior chef, a cooking class for children aged nine to 12, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 3:45 to 5 p.m., and a session will be held for teens on Monday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m., where they will make twisted taco cheeseburgers.

An adult cooking class is also available, in the morning of Monday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m., and on Tuesday evening, Oct. 29, starting at 6:30 p.m.

A session of teen totes will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.

Families can come out for a Hallow-Eve movie night on the night before Halloween, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m., where the movie “Ghostbusters” will be shown. Popcorn and candy will be provided.

A session of the book club will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., where the discussion will be on “Nothing Daunted” by Dorothy Wickenden. Next month’s book is “Power Play” by Maureen Ulrich, and copies will be available at the front desk.

Adults can also take in a class on making fabric bookmarks on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
